Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
I have been on my Topomax ofr three months now. It has been working great......Until.............Allergy season.
Not sure where the Blame Lies though. Not sure if i am experiencing just allergies or if i am back to having migraines. i have been upped to 200mg of topomax per night. Yeah the side effect tend to drive me crazy at times but i love being migraine free. Will discuss the side effects( tingly feeling and itchy skin and the dry mouth) With Neuro.
But now I get Headaches, Not sure if these can just be blamed on allergies. They feel different. Not the same as a migraine. i have had only two migraines since going on the topomax. I have had the Aura a few times but have not had them devolope into the full blown migraine because i have lain down in dark room and relaxed. Or i have drank a cup of Joe. Dr. Told me not to go Completely caffine free.
But I have had a really bad year this year with the allergies and my PCP is trying to treat me for these. But this is still very annoying. Anyone had this happen> Get rid of your migraines only to have a different type of headache develope.

I've found that with all of these medications.. there are pros and cons. Allergies in the spring and the meds that relieve those - conflict w/migraine meds.. Cold and flu season meds... it's the same ole same ole..
I'm at the point where I'm looking at alternatives for her to have relief from the headaches.

SO, finally went to the neuro - went on topamax and it was great except for the racing heart. i was able to tolerate the side effects of tingling (no other real side effects like cognitive or hair loss). So after up at 100mg for a month, went back to the doc with the racing heart and told her that I wasn't sure I could stay on this med because I am a marathon runner (and was upset that topamax made me loose about 8 lbs because it was all muscle)
Anyway, long story short, a few days ago she switched me to zonegran. Went to the gym yesterday (only after having taken zonegran for about two days) and had a GREAT RUN!
As for the allergies - I take Claritin D everyday (only recently haven't taken it and trying to take it on an as needed basis.) This is allergy season where I live so maybe that's the same for where you are - and it's temporary. I would ask your doc first though because Topamax does increase the heart and Claritin D has sudafed in it (which some people are very sensitive to) and see maybe if there is something else that you can take for the seasonal allergy since there is (what seems to be - can't say for sure since I am not a doc on my my experience) no interaction with topamax and allergy med.
hope this was somewhat helpful - i hate allergies - and the one that i have is YEAR LONG because it's dust - YUCK!! with all the international travel, you can image why I stay on claritin D!
