Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
In my case the sinus problem are usually what triggers the migraine. From what i have read sinus and migraine headaches often go hand in hand. It's a shame really since migraines alone are enough to have to deal with. I think that possibly the pain from the sinus triggers the migraine. On a really bad day I find a tension headache will join the other two as a result of being in so much pain I suppose. Or maybe because bad things come in 3's?
I too am presently on antibiotics for a sinus infection, I had been blaming my symptoms on migraine alone but it just would not let up. As a matter of fact today is the first day I have not had a migraine since the 1st of the month. It is thanks to the fact I'm almost finished my antibiotics.
I can not wait until my antibiotics are done and I can feel like a somewhat healthy person once again. My son is ill right now with a bad cold so I am keeping my fingers crossed that I do not pick it up.
You might want to talk with your doctor about treating allergies. Perhaps your sinus are acting up due to some kind of allergen. One sure way I could tell what kind of headache I had was how it would respond to treatment.
I would usually start off by taking sinutab or tylenol sinus medication. Within the hour I would usually find some relief it was a sinus headache. Now however I try to stay away from such over the counter medications as my kidney function is not so great. I should mention that these medications should not be taken by people with high blood pressure. You would probably want to check with your doctor before taking them unless you are in good health.
Allergies can develop at any time so even if previous tests showed that you had no sinus problems you sure could have developed one. Advil liquid gelcaps have also been helpful for both migraine and sinus pain but once again I have to be careful not take them very often because of kidney function. Darn kidney function messing with my over the counter meds!
So I hope you find something here helpful. Good luck with your next doctor's appointment.
You can also, have both sinus problems AND migraine. Also, you have migraine and the occasional sinus infection.
I know when I get a breakthrough migraine, my nose stuffs up, my "sinuses" throb (in me, though, that is really the central branch of my Trigeminal Nerve becoming swollen and sensitive) and my eyes will water. SOUNDS like sinus, but in me, it usually isn't. (I was a Sudafed addict for years. In fact, it is the ONLY drug which causes reliable Rebound Headaches in me.) When the migraine subsides, so does the "sinus" pressure. I USED to get sinus infections, at least 4 or 5 a year, when I stopped ALL Dairy Products, I found I have never gotten an other one. Also, I was on nasal steroids, but for some reason they irritate my Trigeminal Nerve (I also have occasional Trigemial Neuralgia) and cause MORE headaches. I know for many people they are a really great med.
Your milage may vary.
I hope you feel better.
