Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
I recently received injections in the base of my skull to numb the nerves in order to help with my migraines. I have not noticed a difference. Has anyone else received this treatment? If so, what has your experience been like?

There are so many type of injections. Do you happen to know which ones they were? What was the medicine injected?

I'm not sure which medication it was. It was a numbing medication. I am positive it was not Botox though. Right where my neck and skull meet.

I have taken about 3 rounds of the Botox injections over the past 5 years and could not really see a difference....I kept trying them in hopes they would work ....I won't be taking any more of these treatments and I get pretty desperate.....averaging 15-20 migraines a month.

I've tried the injections 4 times. Each time in the back of my neck, at my temples and above my right eye targeting specific nerves. After the injections, my neck and face were numb but the headache was still there in the background. I decided to stop trying. A lot of extra pain for little relief.

The injections I received have not helped at all. They have only seemed to make my neck stiff.

Sounds like you had trigger point injections, they help with nerve pain and migraines. My Neurologist also tried these with me, I had little success with them, I was numb for a day or two but my migraines and nerve pain in my neck came back. I have nerve damage in my neck and there is no curvature bend in it. A month later I tried my first round of Botox, 26 injections total. I was pretty sore afterwards. A week after the injections was LIVING HELL for me. I had a skin rash, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, dizziness, migraines. These symptoms were so bad I spent a week in bed or on the couch. But after that I have to say my nerve pain went away and migraines subsided a lot. (I was having 20+ a month). But now my migraines and neck pain is coming back, I think because the Botox is wearing off, and maybe because I need another round of injections. I'm a little nervous about trying them but my Neuro Dr. says there are 4 different types of Botox to try, so I'm going to bite the bullet and just do it.

Hi, I don't know if it's too late, but. I received nerve block injections at the base of my skull for over two years about every 6 weeks. One on each side. They did seem to help, but I started receiving botox injections about a year ago, and those seem to last longer. Still neither were the miracle cure I was hoping for.

Hey there. I used to get trigger point and nerve block injections and they would work for a week and then the headaches were back. I now get Botox shots. Every 12 weeks. It has helped a lot. Not a cure - but definitely a band aid. I've been getting them for a year now. I've had migraines for 32 years. I've tried acupuncture, physical therapy, frequent massages, diet changes, nerve block shots, various meds, Botox and now Invisalign. It is a debilitating thing to go through and I hope it gets better for everyone. It's unfortunate that those that do not have this illness do not understand the seriousness of it. I recently received a reprimand letter at work for absences, and I have FMLA paperwork on file! People just don't get it. Try Botox! I was hesitant but I'm glad I did it.
