Your insurance would have to approve you for a quantity more than 9, which would require your doctor providing information to your insurance company on why you need more than 9. I'll tell you straight up that it won't happen.
When new people come into this group with questions like this, the first thing that comes into my mind is how poor performing the doctor is. It's the doctor's job to help you, and help you feel better....to get your migraines under control. And it doesn't sound like your doctor is doing that.

Ok, so it doesn't sound like your doctor explained how and when to use this medicine, so bare with me. There is a reason Imitrex (a triptan) has such a limit per month. Used properly, they shouldn't be taken more than 2 pills per day, for a max of 2 days per week. So that would be 4 pills in one week. The reason for such strict use is the effect of rebound headaches, or medication overuse headaches. It's very real, and so extremely painful. Rebound headaches are often more painful that the original migraine you are trying to stop. But you don't automatically realize it's a rebound because you're not keeping tract of how many days you are taking medication for it. It all blends into one massive headache.

Medicating yourself with anything, be it triptans, prescription painkillers, even OTC painkillers for more than 2-3 days will trigger a rebound headache. The ONLY way to get rid of it is to stop all the medication. I know that sounds horrible and cruel, and believe me, it FEELS horrible and cruel...but it really is the only way to break the cycle. If you don't have a medical situation that would preclude it, a short course of steroids REALLY helps.

A number of times I have thrown myself into a rebound cycle using OTC Excedrin. I only recognize it once I start counting the number of days I've been taking it, and how bad the headache is.

I'm not sure what kind of doctor you are seeing. I'm just going to throw a piece of advice out there. If you are not already doing so, please find a HEADACHE SPECIALIST. I don't mean just a neurologist, because you can open the phone book and find one of them. A real, trained, headache specialist. It makes a world of difference.

Thank you Yvette, that makes sense. Yes, I am probably over medicating and making it worse between the IBU 800, Imitrex, Prescription painkiller. I just hurt so bad I don't know what to do and I'm miserable. I didn't realize I was making it worse and there are times I lose count of the number of Advil I have taken.

My primary care doctor is a good primary doctor but thought my condition was being handled by my Neuro Ophthalmologist. I showed up at his office begging for help and this is what he gave me.

I will look for a Headache Specialist now. Maybe they are even familiar with Intracranial Hypertension. I appreciate your advice and input.

I don't know how familiar your PCP is about steroids (commonly used when the migraine lasts for days, and no medicine will break it) for a very short time, around 3-5 days. It never hurts to call and ask. There are two common steroids, either the dose pack, which is the medrol dose pack, which I think is 5 days and decadron with is 3 days. I always opt for the 3 days of decadron because for me, that is more effective. The worst thing they can say is no, but I would plead my case if I were you.
If you DO get it, don't take any other medication other than the steroids. And, ice can be your best friend during this time. Just wrap your whole head in it. Just numb it as best you can. Those are the two best pieces of advice I can give someone coming off painkillers. Numb, numb, numb, and try to get steroids.

Thank you Yvette for the information and emotional support! I'm going to the dentist tomorrow and he has given me the 5 day dose before but obviously not for headaches. I may just ask him for some, it's not like I'm asking for a narcotic and he knows my situation.

This all started when I began having major dental work in June. It kicked off this miserable disease and these horrific headaches so maybe he will have pity on me. Thank you for telling me what to specifically ask for. I was going to ask you. I appreciate you!

Just thought I would write to second Yvette's comments. The rebound headache bit is real! And horrible. That is one reason I have three different types of abortives and I keep a diary of the abortives I use so as to avoid using any of them too often and avoid a rebound headache. This is further complicated when I have a fibromyalgia flare and am in severe pain for days on end - take pain relief and risk rebound headache or suffer? I also have found that that the steroids are helpful to break it. If your doctor isn't telling you these thing you need to find a specialist who will. Best of luck!

A friend told me this secret about migraine meds. You can get a refill at 3 weeks and not wait till 4 weeks. Also, you can ask for a second type of migraine medication and keep getting them refilled every 3 weeks. I am always afraid I will run out so I tend to hoard these meds. I refill 2 different meds each month.

You can also appeal your insurance company on the number of pills. I had to appeal three times but finally got 16 pills instead of 4 a month. My doctor had requested 18 pills and they reduced it to 16. My husband knows all the ins and outs and isn't afraid of taking on insurance companies. Also, when we changed insurance companies and they wanted to do the same, I just showed them the letter from the insurance department of my state and they accepted it.
