Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
What migraine sufferer hasnt been through EACH and EVERY OTC medication before finally seeing their doctor??? She makes it sound like we ran right to our dr for an Rx at the first sign of our first migraine. Puh-leeze.
You know what I like to remember? Every class of med students has people at the bottom of their class. But guess what? The person who graduates last gets the title of DOCTOR just as the person who graduates first. It makes me realize that there are tons of moronic doctors out there.
First, she is just reporting on a clinical trial. I think people have to read the trial. Secondly she is not talking complete relief for everyone. Her post says 56% had some relief while apparently only a small number 18% were completely pain free. Additionally, her report of the study says that at 2 hours, Tylenol was equivalent to another prescription drug.
Statistics are subject to interpretation. As I read it, she could have said that over 80% will still have some pain after taking Tylenol, and almost 50% will have no relief. It just depends how you characterize the study and data.
There may be definitional issues as to what constitutes a migraine, and the posters may have more serious ones and be part of the large 44% who would not respond. Perhaps other studies would indicate other results, but this article did not seem crazy.
Acetaminophen did not differ from sumitriptan (Imitrex) for reducing headache pain at 2 hours and was associated with fewer side effects than sumitriptan.
At 2 hours, 56% of patients who took 1000 mg of acetaminophen had headache relief, and 18% were pain free at 2 hours with a single 1000mg dose of acetaminophen
I read the clinical trial a few times before I spoke my first word.
In the end, it doesn't matter. I can go on and on about what is wrong wtih the trial.
The bottom line is the good Doctor has put out there for the world to see that ----tylenol is all that you need for migraines---- People read that and they beleive that. When they "beleive" - that it is harmful to us. Then they think we are whiners and drug addicts because we ask for more help with pain.
A doctor says it so on the internet so it must be true.
Thirty years ago I had to deal with this stigma when I was told by a doctor it was just a headache. Today, Migraines are so horribly underfunded in this country compared to other diseases.
I do understand where your thinking is, Bobby and I respect that.
The reality is, that Migrainers get no respect and my pledge to myself and other Migrainers is to not me complacent about my disease.
Drug companies pay big bucks to have studies like that run. New ethics guidelines require doctors to disclose in their journal submissions if they received any funding from a drug company and if they received 'ghost articles' provided by others for publication ( a big problem these days).
If you will notice this site has a number of resident doctors who provide articles like her. I doubt they do this for free.
(1) Dr Orrange are you paid for your participation in this forum?
(2) Does this website make money from the advertisements of drug manufacturers?
(3) Is there any link between the "studies" or research promoted by the doctors here and the companies paying for this website?
