Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.

The issue I am dealing with, is that I currently do not have a dr that wants to treat the migraines. I am scheduled to see a headache specialist, but can't get in until Sept. (called today though to see if I can get in sooner) I cannot take things like Imitrex due to when I did take things in that class before, I had what was referred to as a TIA and told by the hospital neuro and my neuro at the time to not take meds in that class again.
I was in the hospital 2 wks ago for 5 days b/c of a myasthenic crisis where I received 5 days of the IVIg - since getting out, I have been to the ER twice with migraine. The first ER dr was awesome and gave me the cocktail I needed to stop the cycle - the second was not nice at all and very reluctant to give me anything and only wanted to treat my nausea. I understand his position but I have my own as well. :/
The other issue I deal with is that I am not resistant to medications but it takes about twice what it takes for the typical person to treat me. So if you give the typical person 1mg dilaudid you gotta give me 2 and hope that does something for me. :) ANd that is where I am - needed dilauded for my migraines... :(
I k now this got long and I am sorry but it is just frustrating to live every day with migraine - I do feel your pain!
I feel I have a medication for every type. I try to diagnose the headache myself by where the pain starts and the first symptoms.
Since I also get nausea with headaches, I immediately take an anti-nausea pill. That's the first step.
I do not waste my time on Tylenol/Excedrine, and cannot tolerate Ibuprofin.
If the pain comes from my neck, I take Tramodol. If it's an ice-pick migraine just starting, then Fioricet. If it's more intense and fast, then Maxalt and sleep.
I also have an Injection of Imitrex, and Norco. If it is intense for 24 hours straight then I go to the ER for a cocktail of meds. (Happens about 2x's a year)
If it's sinus related I take a Sudafed or Mucinex, and a Norco.
After 8 years of suffering, and knowing my body really well, I have become very good at choosing the correct med.
The only thing I can't deal with is when the dizziness and spinning starts!
Are you on a preventative? That is also helpful for me, along with BOTOX injections every 3 months.
Good luck!
Now, there's this other issue with my insurance, so now I'm at a standstill with my doctors & my insurance company until the matter is cleared up. I have to now get the DOI (department of Insurance) involved because the insurance company is doing some unethical practices, which is another headache of its own. The state of healthcare is in a crisis right now & so am I.
That combination I took, worked. I won't take Tylenol alone, I take it with a prescribed medication like Fioricet, Tizanidine, Dicoflenac Potassium, or Dichlor. Those are supposed to be my rescue medications. I don't take any preventives anymore because it wasn't working. And then I had a major set back with my blood pressure, so my PCP (primary care physician) took me off that medication & put me on two other blood pressure medications. I'm sorry this post is so long, but this issue is so serious, I need help & advice immediately!! These headaches keep coming back & there is no help. I get a headache at least 15-20 days out of any given month & I'm really that commercial living a "maybe" life!!!
I was to the point of it being the next step in my treatment plan and then I was dx with Myasthenia Gravis which is a neuro muscle disease and so Botox is not permitted.
The number of days I get migraines/headaches is ridiculous- at least 18-20. There has to be relief out therefor those infus out there who have this much difficulty.
Keep us updated!!
Hugs!
I easily was approved for botox.
I had my first botox session in April 2015.
2nd is scheduled in Mid July.
Definitely if you are getting that many migraines, I would talk to your migraine specialist about this treatment.
I understand where you are and hope it improves!
