Migraine Headaches Support Group
Migraine is a neurological disease, of which the most common symptom is an intense and disabling episodic headache. Migraine headaches are usually characterized by severe pain on one or both sides of the head and are often accompanied by photophobia (hypersensitivity to light), phonophobia (hypersensitivity to sound) and nausea.
Good luck with your Neurologist appointment today!
Sometimes when NOTHING helps your migraine, you may need to discuss the use of steroids (either IV or by mouth) to control the migraine.
It was around this time last year I felt exactly like you. :(
I hope you have some relief soon!
Hugs,
Carol
If you don't have that option, steroids is the other choice. I sometimes get a migraine that is a level 11, and nothing will break it except steroids. You take it over a period of 3 days orally, and by day 3 your migraine should be gone. You can also get it as an infusion.
At this point, you NEED to call your doctor's office, and give them an update. Tell them that the medicine did not work and your headache is still just as bad, and ask if you can be put on a course of steroids (if infusion is not available to you). You need some type of relief at this point, and you just are not getting it with the medicine you have now.
While I'm giving you advice here....you haven't said it, but I'm just going to go out on a limb here and guess that you are taking quite a bit of medicine on a daily basis just trying to find some relief. If that IS the case, you have to stop. I know that sounds counter productive, considering how bad your head hurts, and it sounds cruel to ask you to do that, but you have to stop taking pain medicine for your head.
The problem is that once you get into a cycle of taking pain meds is that you end up with a cycle of rebound headache, which I can tell you from experience is worse than the migraines they were meant to treat. In fact, I could almost guarantee that you aren't having the original migraine anymore, but rebounds migraines.
It really is so important that you stop taking your pain meds, and your "as needed" meds, and try to get some steroids. You are going to hurt, I'm not going to lie. But you have to get out of this cycle.
I wish you the best of luck, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
When you see your doctor, I would ask how to break the cycle. Steroids can usually do that.
Good luck
If you don't want to take that opportunity, that's up to you. Many people don't even get opportunity.
I will tell you this, if you go to other neurologists, which they will have your records, and they see you turned down a treatment that probably would have worked, unless you have some a really valid reason not to go, they may not have very many options for you.
I would just rethink your decision. You would find relief if you did it. And that IS what you want, relief.
