My dad is 71 hes been liveing with mesothelioma a yr now hes a true miricule, i will tell u my dad never smoked , which helped he got this disease from working around asbestos all his life, his all began with shortness of breath and a bad cough.

I will tell u they caught him in an early stage early enough surgery was an option and he took it because thet said if he did not he wouldnt be here today, he went to a good hospital that had experience in this surgery , it was a very ruff surgery on him im not going to lie but he was willing to do anything and so was our family. Treatments and done well with them my mom is also 71 she makes sure he eats healthy. He is now like stage 2 or 3 but the doc didnt feel at this point he needed radiation but has to go back soon to docter to see if he needs more chemo.
Ive had an uncle pass and also a grandnpa pass from this afual disease to they worked with my dad, but i think the key to this diesease is catching it early and get surgery as harc as recovery from it may be get it it youre a canidate for it! If u smoke quit , think positive and pray and thats the key from what i can see so far and with that will help u better thru this awful diease.

I am sorry you have this to go through. I, also, am going through it with my husband who is 71. Tom was never sick his whole life and strong as an ox. A year ago last summer he started coughing. It took till Sept for me to convince him to go to the dr, as he thought it was from smoking and nothing else. When he finally went in Sept, 13, they had to drain 1600 of fluid from his lungs. Two weeks later, another 1600. We were doctoring at the VA in San Diego. From Sept 2013 until August of 2014, they did 5 biopsies. All came back non conclusive. One invasive biopsy left him with drains which they sent us home with and it became infected and he was in the hospital again. In
Aug 2014, the San Diego VA referred us to the Los Angeles VA, where they specialize in this cancer. We met with Dr. Robert Cameron and on Tues we had another biopsy. Two days later we were told he had meso. Tom still felt pretty good and was still camping, fishing and doing good. He was told he needed surgery right away and if he waited until he felt sick, the surgery may not help. On Aug 26, Tom went in for a 12 hour surgery which was scraping of the lining of the right lung and removing the pleura. He had many complications after the surgery and instead of a 10 day hosp stay, he was in the hospital for 5 weeks. He has not been the same since. He has no energy level what so ever, he coughs constantly and for the past 4 weeks has been coughing up blood clots, he has lost 37 pounds, has no appetite at all. His energy level is so low. He sleeps or lays down 4/5 of each 24 hours. He has no quality of life at all at this time. One and a half weeks ago he started radiation treatments. It is too soon to know of any side effects from that but there certainly have been no improvements. We learned after the surgery that he has mixed meso which is extremely more aggressive than normal meso. We are feeling like third class citizens and that no one cares. we went for a dr appointment two days ago and after waiting for over 2.5 hours, we left. we saw the dr. in the hall many times but the dr never stopped and spoke to us or told us it would be a wait. we also do not know what to expect. we are told prognosis is terminal but I keep wanting to know what to look for and what to do as this progresses. I would love to have a discussion with anyone's' family who has gone through this. I am willing to discuss our progress if it will help anyone.

Blood coughed up

Shortness of breath

Problems with bowel function

Wheezing or cough

Abdominal pain

Abnormal buildup of fluid in the abdomen

Fluid buildup surrounding the lung

A mass in the abdomen

Chest wall pain

Blood clots in the veins

Jaundice

Low blood sugar
