Menopause Support Group
Menopause is the physiological cessation of menstrual cycles associated with advancing age. It normally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when the body begins to slow and stop the production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone production decreases, and menstruation diminishes, eventually stopping altogether.

Hi, Ladies,
I am new here. I am 38 yrs old and desperate for answers. This all began on March 15, 08. I started to get very anxious and having panic attacks. I pretty much have the panic under control, but I am having a rough time with the anxiety. I do ok for a couple of weeks, but about 3 days before my period I get very anxious and stay that way for about 2 wks. I am being treated for anxiety/depression and have an appt with a gyn next week. Am I too young for peri-menopause?

NO!! I ALSO GET VERY ANXIOUS BEFORE MY PERIOD, BUT ALL GETS BETTER ONCE I START. EVERYBODY IS DIFFERENT WHEN IT COME TO MENO SYMPTOMS, BUT ONE THING FOR SURE, WE KNOW WHAT THEY ARE:) MY GYN PERSCRIBED VALIUM FOR THOSE ANXIOUS DAYS. I HAVEN'T TAKEN ANY YET, I JUST GOT THEM IN MAY, AND THIS LAST MONTH WAS NOT TOO BAD. HE ALSO WANTED TO TRY ZOLOFT, BUT WE DECIDED ON A SHORT TERM METHOD INSTEAD OF A LONG TERM AT THIS TIME. HE DID SAY IF YOU START HAVING MORE BAD DAYS THAN GOOD, ITS BETTER TO TAKE AN ANTIDEPRESSANT. I HOPE YOU GET THE ANSWERS THAT YOUR LOOKING FOR, GOOD LUCK:)

Thanks, it helps to talk to someone who understands. Sometimes I feel like I am going crazy.

OH I KNOW SO WELL HOW YOU FEEL. ONCE I UNDERSTOOD THAT IT WAS MENO AND NOT ME, IT PUT MY MIND TO REST. I TRY REAL HARD TO COPE KNOWING THAT I WILL BE OK, AND THAT THE SYMPTOMS WILL EASE UP SOONER OR LATER. YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT SITE, BECAUSE WE ALL HAVE BEEN THERE IN ONE FORM OR ANOTHER. YOUR NOT CRAZY:) MAKE SURE YOU GET YOUR HORMONE LEVELS CHECKED BY YOUR GYN. STAY CALM, AND TAKE CARE:)

It could very well be the start of peri-menopause. You should educate yourself by looking in the web as well as going to the library and reading books. There is so much i have learned since this all began. If you get your hormones checked do not be surprised if they come out normal. During peri-menopause our hormones jump up and down all the time it is hard to get a correct reading. Sometimes a good doctor will go by your symptoms. Good luck and please educate yourself!!!

Thanks so much for your replies. I have written down a list of symptoms as I have them to take to the Gyn. I am definitely going to have all of the bloodwork done as well as reading up on the subject.

i have heard of women starting peri-meno as early as 25 sounds crazy but true. i have not had a regular per. since i was 35 and just now my gyn said that my hormones and symptoms show that i am perimeno. everything you are feeling is what i feel and i basically walked into my gyno and said GIVE ME SOMETHING! she perscribed me zoloft which in two weeks the panic attacks and crazy thoughts calmed down. i still got the irregular heart beats 3 days prior to when i normally start my per. but now i can tell you i feel 85% better. i still get the heat flashes and the anger and i have no desire for sex. there are several other symptoms you can find on this site. i have only been on for about a mo. and i believe a lot of my symptoms have eased just from the friends i have met and the comments i have read. becareful with the Valium it is addicting and causes you to feel down. ask for Ativan 1mg and take half the days you feel anxious. I took Zoloft 6yrs. ago when I lost both of my parents and was having a lot of anxiety attacks and after 3 mo. i winged myself off and i was fine.

I started with the meno symptoms at 38 as well. I started having the sweats, high bursts of energy, unable to sleep well and anxiety attacks. That went on and off for several years. I started crying at commercials (ok, more often) and at every little things that came up. I did notice that stress had a lot to do with the symptoms. If my stress was high (work, kids) during the day then it really affected me during the evening. I also noticed that if I didnt eat right, high sugar or alcohol then it would affect the night sweats. There are some over the counter drugs you can take.. Primrose worked a little for me. Cutting back on the coffee also helped some.

I don't drink coffee at all and have tried to cut back on caffinated tea and colas as well. This morning I got up and just could not come to work. I felt as I was shaking inside from head to toe. I have allergy symptoms such as stuffy ears and head which make me anxious. I just don't feel myself. Does taking birth control pills help with peri-menpausal symptoms?
