Menopause Support Group
Menopause is the physiological cessation of menstrual cycles associated with advancing age. It normally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when the body begins to slow and stop the production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone production decreases, and menstruation diminishes, eventually stopping altogether.
I could have written reply #2 myself, except I am not sure I have fibromyalgia...I've wondered about it...
I was going to post about this same topic, but momshere beat me to it...I wake up feeling achy and exhausted, and this improves a little bit as the day goes on...but not much...
It is getting very discouraging, as the body affects the mood and the mind so much - and I have been going through an increase in depression as well...so I am pretty much a mess right now.
I read something recently about how everyone focuses on the thyroid as being the cause of weight gain and fatigue, when actually so many women in peri and menopause have problems with their adrenal glands being exhausted, and this is the real reason for these symptoms. But how many medical problems can we investigate, and how many supplements can we take??? IIt already takes me about fifteen minutes to take all my vitamins.
As far as evening primrose oil, I switched to this as a source for GLA rather than the borage oil I was taking, at the advice of my MD - so we shall see, as I just started it, what effect it has. I just read somewhere that a good dose of GLA for symptoms was 1,000 mg a day...but that would be about 10 capsules of the primrose oil - and 10 more grams of fat a day, when I am trying to lose the weight I gained on antidepressants.
One last thing...I did find that since starting an exercise regimen again (stationery bicycle for thirty minutes, with my goal to up it to 45 minutes, at the advice of my MD), my knee pain has much improved. But the general achiness and fatigue are still there, with a vengeance. It is now 11:30 AM here, and I just feel like going back to bed.
Let me know how you two are doing, and if there is any improvement...

I know I am also depressed but I was laid off of work so I think that contributes to the depression along with menopause. I have no energy, going to the grocery store is a major event and then I don't get much more done that day that I go to the store. I would like to have more energy and sleep better, any ideas?
In response to your question about the evening primrose oil - it is the GLA in the oil which is supposed to be helpful...I was taking borage oil, which also has GLA, but my MD told me that the primrose oil was better for correcting hormonal problems...so I switched to the primrose oil - so apparently primrose oil is an all-around good supplement to take for all menopausal symptoms... (according to my MD....)
I had read somewhere that a good dosage of GLA for correcting menopausal symptoms was 1,000 mg. (and this is 1,000 mg of GLA - not primrose oil - so you wouldn't be getting this amount of GLA from taking one 1,000 mg capsule of oil...) - but since this amount added-up to 10 capsules of primrose oil a day, I didn't want to take in that much fat, especially since I am trying to lose weight...so I am taking three capsules a day...
I wanted to add that I also feel much of my depression comes from being unemployed...I left my job five years ago, because I felt it was becoming extremely unethical...I thought I could find another job right away...but with the economy being what it is, I haven't...I wish there was an unemployment group on Daily Strength which gave members a chance to express their feelings about being unemployed...if I had the energy, I would start one...
Best wishes, Janet
