It normally occurs in women between the ages of 45 and 55, when the body begins to slow and stop the production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone production decreases, and menstruation diminishes, eventually stopping altogether.

I know this is a rather ridiculous question but I need to ask those who may know. Is there an age for when menopause can start? My mother is 46 and thinks she's going through it. I always thought your 40s was too young. Is it?

There is no set age for menopause, before it happens there is usually the stretch called peri-menopause. Just like menopause but monthly cycles (of sorts). Your mom is going to need to see a physician.

Well, there is Peri-menopause then menopause then post menopause. Symptoms begin... then ramp up... and then taper off. So yes your mom may indeed be starting peri menopuase, in fact if she is having questions, she probably is. Its a long process for some and can be sever or not so much. I fall into the insane and give me drugs catagory.

Its all good though, havn't committed any crimes yet and my adult kids are still talking to me. Wish her luck and if she says she needs space... give it to her, for both your sakes. lol

Menopause can start at any age, but is around 50 for most women.
It is highly possible that your mother has started her transition with peri-menopause which kicks off the start of menopause.

This started for me at 46 also, but my friend was 40 when she started, so it may well be what your mother is experiencing.
