Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Unrealistic expectations

I have been doing really good lately and have not had nystagmus or vertigo in 8 weeks. Although I am happy about this, I have still got the tinnitus and the unsteadiness as well as the fullness. My husband, however, said "oh good--let's plan a cruise to celebrate!" and says I'm being pessimistic when I tell him my lack of bad symptoms may last a year-- or 3 minutes. I know he means well, but I feel that I have to constantly be the bearer of bad news. Does anyone understand what I mean?

I understand 100%....I also had what I call a decent couple of months....to me that's just no full pelt vertigo.... I still have bad balance issues and the others symptoms on a daily basis though... An as soon as family or friends see that ur doing a little bit better..they assume that we are getting better completely... They don't get it could last a week or maybe a couple of months...my husband works really hard and supports me so when he begged me to book a holiday for in a couple of weeks time, I just gave in an said yes out of guilt, Now I'm just worrying about the flight,and getting through the holiday instead of being like a normal person and thinking 'yes 2 weeks in the sun,in a beautiful country' I'm just worrying about everything to do with the damn holiday...so I really do understand... Only you can decide if u want to go... Hope that helped at least a bit :))

I can relate. Perhaps your husband would be open to a vacation you might be more comfortable with. I have been fortunate my husband has been supportive and has seen my ups and downs. I hope you find a resolution.

Ive been having bad episodes every two months!!! After two months go by ...8 weeks....I can expect that's when another one is looming on the horizon. This darn disease can raise its ugly head when you least expect it. I, like DizzyJulie still had dizziness and some balance problems during those good two months. I'm afraid to vacation too, but if I go even three hours away from home I make sure I have my meclizine and xanax or a steroid pk. which helps ward anything off. Good luck! I'm single now, but my grown kids are always encouraging me to get out and enjoy myself whenever I can and I do get scared!!

I know exactly how you feel. If I don't talk about the daily symptoms that are not vertigo, the assumption is there that I am 100% fine. I don't even look forward to going out for dinner anymore. I am so thankful that my husband is supportive, but I think I really surprise him sometimes... like when we are walking down the sidewalk next to each other and I run into him. Vacations are hard. Eating meals out is hard. Changes in schedule are hard. But, I also don't want to become a recluse. It's a daily tight-rope walk.
I wonder if there is a way you could find out information about food etc. that could help you plan for a realistic trip.
Congrats on feeling better, by the way. That is big!
