Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Saturday I had a bad vertigo with nystagmus attack and as I lay on the bed trying not to move a muscle, my husband was asking what do you usually do when this happens. I told him I needed meclizine, xanax (since I am out of valium), and a Phenergan--then a 3 or 4 hour nap usually or sometimes makes it go away for a while if I can catch it before the vomiting starts--and fortunately this time I had. Is this approximately what most people do especially is they are not working or are retired?

Exactly what I do....meclizine and xanax usually prevent a severe episode if I take them soon enough, and I've been given sublingual zofran (anti nausea/vomiting) which is given to chemo patients for nausea, and if I get one under my tongue soon enough it also prevents the throwing up. It DOES wipe one out for several hours and even the next day after an episode, I feel exhausted. Hang in there.

The fatigue is the most surprising symptom. I use little meds because I work and drive a little but if I have to call out sick I have to sit in a chair or be in bed for hours or the recovery takes much longer. Thank goodness for netflix.

its what i do also during an attack. after the attack has ended like the next day i start on a course of 5 mg. 1X day prednisone for 3-5 days and that also seems to help bring the inner ear inflammation down.

hmm I have about a 5 minute window from the time I get that first head rush till I can get into a safe place gather what I know im going to need because with in 5 minutes im sick as a dog.
The room starts spinning 1 minute after that first head rush as does my balance. (looks like I am drunk)
after 2 minutes I am sweating profusely and am stripping off my clothes as I lay down with a fan on me or the airconditioner on full blast.
3 minutes into my attack im incoherent, 4 minutes in im nauseous and by 5 minutes I am in a full blown vertigo attack. 3-4 hrs later its over and I sleep.
I yet have been able to catch the attack in time to take anything since it will just come back up.
I wish I could do like you all but no such luck. it sucks never knowing where I am going to be when a attack happens. if out when a attack hits I have bags in the car that I have to use as my husband drives me back home, its embarrensing when you have a vertigo attack out in public!

I usually feel a bit off before a vertigo episode hits. I have my routine. I get my meclizine and a Valium. If nausea hits me hard I take my promethazine. I am still currently working and have had episodes at work. They know to call my husband and he picks me up. Usually within a few hours the vertigo subsides but the next day I still have balance issues and feel really out of it.
