Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

need suggestions - restaurants

Hi All,
Does anyone have either restaurant chain suggestions, or tips on things to order at restaurants to stay on a low sodium diet.

My extended family is going on vacation together. We'll be eating out every night, by necessity. Any tips on restaurants I can suggest with good low-sodium options?

Or, if they all decide they really want Chinese one night, or Mexican, what do I order at those places?

My only idea so far is salad, with dressing on the side. But I can't eat only salad for an entire week. Ideas??

WELL IT IS HARD YOU CAN NOT EAT EITHER OF THOSE BUT YOU CAN EAT AT STEAK PLACES ASK THEM TO COOK YOUR FOOD PLAIN AND A BAKED POTATO WITH SOUR CREAM AND ANY FRUIT OR VEGTABLES ,PLAN ALL SO. YOU CAN HAVE EGGS AND TOAST WITH JELLY, PLAIN BAKED CHICKEN AND FISH NO SEA FOOD,SOME PLACES HAVE A NUTRTION PAPER TO TELL YOU WHAT THEY HAVE IN LOW SODIUM, SO BE CARE FULL AND ENJOY YOUR SELF JUST CHECK ON THINGS SO YOU DO NOT HAVE A ATTACK, HUGS SHIRLEY

I go to steak houses but make sure their meat is not put in a marinade. I take unsalted butter in a container in my purse when we are going out. I take raspberry vinaigrette dressing (25mg per 2 tbsp) I usually get a baked potato, salad with no meat, croutons, or eggs and lots of places have apple sauce. Careful with chicken at restaurants, they pump it full of sodium to plump it up and preserve it.

If you or a family member has a smart phone, I downloaded an application called Sodium1 on the iPhone. It has lots of restaurants listed with the sodium count for each menu item. Good luck, and have a great trip!

I like the I-phone app! And ask for their sodium ingredient list. By law they have to provide one. I did that last night at Applebee's. Of course the whole table was totally AMAZED at the HUGE amounts of sodium in everything. But I found fish fillets, and then had them prepare a side salad with dressing on the side. Meal was quite good, and the sodium was within daily allowance of 2000 mg. It is surprising how many, many dishes are 4,000 mg!!! and then add drinks and appetitzers!!! YIKES!
But by law they have to have and give you a list of sodium in their meals. Just order individually, or appetizer size to make a meal.

If I eat out, someplace that the menu is loaded with sodium, I found that sometimes the simple way is the best, oder a hamburger (unseasoned and no bun) letuce and tomatoe and unsalted fries can work. I also normally drink ice water with a lemon wedge. no the best but it works.
My answer to chinese restaurants is white rice and stir fried veggies no sauce when stir fired, or a little duck sauce sweet and sour on the side.
Steak houses work as long they dont season or marinate...
And I did find McDonalds finnaly has something for us the apple and Walnut salad at least you dont sit they while the kids eat....

Good luck with those restaurants! I just got back from a trip and even though I really tried, my sodium spiked, as did my symptoms..... I bought fresh fruit to grab for breakfast and lunch. I also got snacks from Trader Joe's like unsalted chips, nuts and mango slices. Then, I ordered from a menu for suppers. Like others have said, burgers and fries with no salt. I usually ask for several slices of tomatoes to avoid the ketchup. Watch out that they don't soak their baked potatoes in saltwater... Something new I have learned is to order a salad with a couple of slices of lime.... dressing on the side might be too tempting. Just squeeze the lime over the salad and add pepper if you want. Much better than naked lettuce.
But... most of all enjoy your family trip!
