Meniere's Disease Support Group

Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Hi everyone- I am experiencing a new symptom that I have not yet had. In my left ear, it is very loud, but not a regular ringing sound. I would describe it as the same feeling you get when you yawn and for a second there is a shaking sound. I am not sure if that makes sense...hard to describe! It is almost like a vibration that is noisy and is accompanied by fullness.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have had the vertigo, tinnitus, fullness, general sense of off-balance, etc. but not this. It has been going on for almost an entire day now. I hate to complain because it is much better than being dizzy (which I am not today :)! ) but it is driving me crazy.

Has anyone else experienced this? Should I be concerned and get it checked out? OR do you think it is just another side effect that will come and go from Meniere's?

Oh yes, understand completely. The sounds in my ears vary dramatically. I was once actually mad at a neighbor because I thought they were using a nail gun at 5:00 in the morning, only to discover when I woke up that the loud noise was my ear! There are different kinds of tinnitus. One kind is a pulsating noise (the nail gun...) that has the rhythm of your heart. Then there are the screaming noises that come and go, like our tornado warnings in Minnesota. Then there are the constant, never going away pitches. And the sounds bounce from ear to ear, or both can have different noises. I wish others could hear what happens inside my head. That would help them understand why I have trouble with conversations.
Anyway, let go of your concerns. I like other soft noises so that I have something I like to listen to.

Oh yes, sometimes described as a "whooshing" sounds, "roaring".

Thanks for the input. Have either of you found anything that reduces the symptom? I was able to get in to my ENT and he thought that a vibration in my ear was more of a muscle spasm than a Mnire's symptom.... Not sure I agree with that.
Also, DJ you notice that it is much worse when around other noises? I a teacher and it seems to flare up so much the kids come into the room or we are doing something with lots of chatter. Please tell me this will subside in a few days and not stay forever!

I am a teacher too. I stopped full-time a few years ago because we moved. But it was almost impossible to hear the kids responses. Everything seemed to be at the same high level. I have hyperacusis, not really hearing loss, so everything is loud. And the more noise the more the tinnitus builds. I use musician earplugs to block out loud sounds. I remember teaching from a chair often. I've had MD for over 5 years and I think that it has finally improved a bit. Have you tried lemon bioflavanoids? Have you consider Upper Cervical care for tinnitus? i have a bi-weekly acupuncture treatment and it really help to decrease ear pressure and loud noise for me. Fortunately! my work health insurance paid 90% for acupuncture treatment; best of luck.

I have never heard of lemon bioflavanoids. I will have to look that up. And last summer I looked into Upper Cervical care, but didn't find anyone that provides it within a 90 min radius of me.
I am desperate for a few minutes of relief! It had been roaring for 4 straight days now. What I don't understand is how well I feel with my balance. You would think I would be having dizziness problems along with this, but it seems to be isolated to just the loudness in my left ear.
