Meniere's Disease Support Group
Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.
I've been on a gluten free diet for over 10 years. It has helped me with a number of things, but not Meniere's. People are normally not allergic to gluten, they are usually either intolerant or have celiac disease. Often your normal doctor can give you the blood test for celiac. If it is positive they normally like to follow up with a small intestine biopsy, it is done during a colonoscopy, you don't feel it, they take just a tiny amount.
I had the blood test twice, it came back negative once and positive once. I tested positive to an allergy to wheat. I decided to go on a gluten free diet. I started to feel much better. This was during a time when my Meniere's was not bother me much at all. I was having symptoms like I had fybromyalgia. At that point the doctors (gastroenterologist) wanted to do the biopsy but told me I would have to start eating gluten again for the test to work. I asked, if I have Celiac disease what is the treatment. "A gluten free diet" I decided not to have the test. So I could have it, I might not. I don't eat gluten.
I found out recently I have fructose malabsorption. (this was diagnosed with a hydrogen breath test by a gastroenterologist) that has been a big change in my eating. and I have started feeling much better after starting that diet. I do have less severe vertigo attacks. but I still have my daily vertigo. I'm just off. I spin a little all the time.
I will say, when I went on a gluten free diet I noticed a difference in how I was feeling in a couple of weeks...3 tops. If you want to try it. I would suggest trying to do it with little to no gluten free products, try doing the first few weeks just naturally gluten free. there is so much stuff in the gluten free breads and such that it could skew your results. One exception...rice pasta is pretty clean.
I've tried lot's of different supplements over the years. Most of John of Ohio's regimen...and mostly found I spent a lot of money.
I know a lot on here do seem to get results from chiropractors. I cannot go to a chiropractor as I have had spinal cord leaks. I wouldn't mess around with that area.
I did see on here where someone mentioned Pychogenol, it's a supplement...so I looked it up. I saw the studies done on it. and I decided I'm going to try it. I started it yesterday, I'm going to give it a 90 day trial and see how if it helps. We'll see. I'm a little afraid my results will be a bit skewed though because it is Fall here, and I always get worse in the Fall, in 90 days it will be in the middle of Winter, I will probably be feeling a bit better anyway. Hopefully, I will be feeling much better with the help of this supplement.
dizzyjulie - when you went on acyclovir and betahistine, did you go on them at different times or at the same time? If it was together I'm wondering if you would have had the same side effects if you had gone on them separately? and yes betahisine and Serc are the same thing. Wonder if a different antiviral would give you the same side effects. Since your symptoms started with a cold, I would like to know if antivirals could help you. but often the dose that doctors will prescribe are way under what will help.
I just don't know if my Meniere's came about from a virus or not.
I had so many ear infections and such growing up...well into my 20's... I never had normal feeling ears. I wasn't surprised when something went crazy with my right ear. (first vertigo attack in 1995) It was when I went bilateral in 2008 that my entire life changed. I started having vertigo almost constantly from that point and within 4 years I was deaf.
The one thing that I have found that helps me at all is mindfulness stress reduction.
it is good to find a place where there are others like me.
