I LOVE cake it is my favorite food, so one day my husband bought me a piece of cake and the next morning I was symptomatic. But shortly after I was diagnoisised with MD(I think I was in denial!) I ate a can of soup, 20 mins later full on spins, so I never tried that again! I try to eat less than 500 mg of sodium at a time, and keep to under 1000 mg a day. Sugar has made me mildly dizzy before too.

Many folks on this site mention problems with refined sugar. Chocolate (the real stuff anyways) has caffeine also. I do not know if the problem stems from Meniere's or is just so much like burning carbs and having that drawn out tiered feeling. Fresh and natural is so appealing because these problems don't come up vs processed carbs with sugar and also often salt.

Try some of the dietetic or diabetic foods on the snack market also, once you get over the salt thing even these foods seem more tolerable.
Remember the key isn't to love them but to just like them enough to get over the hump. I eat a lot of sugar free jello for example. Add diet whipped topping and some caned fruit, its as good as anything.

It might be the sugar but it is probably the baking soda and baking powder in the cake. Tons of sodium! When you read the label, they give sodium content for 1/8 teaspoon. Many recipes call for 2 teaspoons at the least....
There are times when I cheat and I get hit within 5 minutes! Oh, how the brain says, "Don't do it!!!!" and the mouth says, "That tastes just fine!"

I really have no food triggers except excessive salt. My doctor advises to keep at 2,000 mg a day or slightly less. I dropped down to 1,000 mg for awhile and he had a fit--said that is not enough--your body needs salt, just not excessive amounts. The average American eats at least twice the recommended amount of 2,000. As long as I follow my doc's advice, food is not a trigger for me---but just about everything else is! Of course I do make sure not to eat huge amounts of sodium at one sitting. I really don't crave salt like I did in the beginning. Fresh food is always better, though, and I don't cook with salt. I'm so sorry that some of you have food issues--as if we don't have enough to deal with!

Yeah I dont have food triggers either but im not a person that eats a lot or eats enough food n a day but I stay away from high salts glad cause I have enough triggers all ready

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences. I never thought of the possible baking soda/ baking powder in baked goods. That's a good point. Diabetic desserts might be worth trying some time as a possible substitute and I do like jello and whipped cream, so thank you for the good ideas. I don't eat a lot of sugar, but on special occasions, I tend to splurge and end up paying for it.

Thanks Rachel on the reminder of baking pwd and baking soda, I had forgot about that. My little trick I do with food also is to use margarine in place of salt, like on potatoes, the amount of salt in margarine is fairly low so that and Mrs Dash and Im a happy camper! I don't know if any of you shop at Aldi but their soups are half the sodium of the rest, this is still too high but better than regular can soup. I hope as time goes buy many of these companies will force lower sodium levels. I know that schools have written into their specs lower sodium amounts in can vegetables, companies like Bush have responded on the foodservice level but am not sure if they are doing the same on the retail level. It is not unreasonable for them to cut in half the sodium level. I try to eat fresh and some frozen veg.

There are no sodium baking powders and baking soda out there. (Normally health food stores) and I use unsalted butter .

I too love cake and cupcakes my fav . but so hard to find any that are low sodium . I always feel the effects of foods sometimes right after eating its weird .

I have a side business I decorate sugar cookies for events...anyway as a baker I can tell you I had to give up all baked goods when I got MD. Not only are baking soda and powder extremely high in sodium but most baked goods have salt in them as well. Those 3 ingredients are levening agents, which means they make the goodies rise. There is sodium free baking powder which I have used and it works well, the sodium free baking soda I have also but have never had any success with it. Every time I use it the goodies come out horrible, and I do double it like you're supposed to!

You'd be surprised how much you can enjoy having just one or two bites of chocolate cake and stopping at that point. As for other sweets, Hershey makes a very good sugar free mini chocolate bar that comes in a bag that usually hangs in a stores candy section. If you can't find it, ask a clerk (which may be harder to find than the candy). Oreo makes a dynamite Oreo sugar free cookie that tastes just like the sugared one. Like hard candy? Look for sugar free Life Savers in the 3oz. bag. Very flavor rich. Use unsalted butter instead of Mayo. If you look for it, you will find many sugar free and salt free foods in the stores. I have a Safeway salt free wheat bread that is excellent. Try this as a peanut butter-banana sandwich. Mmmm, good.
