Meniere's Disease Support Group
Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.
Sue
I empathize with your story. With your recent diagnosis, I see that you are quite bewildered and desperate to understand why this is happening and what you can do. You are like me in 1989, when I first experienced hearing loss and bouts of dizziness. I wondered what was happening to me and why I could not hear as well. After awhile, I became even more concerned after tinnitus set in. I then learned that I had Menieres disease.
First and foremost, I am not a physician. But at the same time, I am an attorney and a 25-year veteran of this disease. Believe me, with the stress in my job, Menieres disease reared its ugly head many times. (Stress is a major trigger for Menieres attacks). But unlike many, I have had the great privilege of having been treated by the worlds foremost physicians, both in the United States (such as the House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles, which unfortunately closed recently due to the economy) and abroad. They greatly changed my life, and helped me battle this dreadful affliction.
I know that you will be hearing from everyone about how to cure this disease. You will be given all types of suggestions and recommended cures. Believe me, I have heard all of them. There is no cure. Everyone is different. But at the same time, you can be proactive, and find out what triggers your Menieres attacks.
In 2006, I wrote an article called Battling Menieres Disease and Migraines. According to some research, including that of a famous doctor at John Hopkins, the triggers of migraines mirror those of Menieres disease. In addition, I learned from world-famous Peruvian doctors how to deal with the disease. My article refers to these doctors and their advice. Again, I am not a doctor, and am only sharing their advice (which changed my life).
Interestingly, I have not corresponded on the Internet with anyone about anything, let alone Menieres disease. I have never shared my article with anyone, except recently with a relative who told me that she suffers from migraines. But after being touched by your story, I realized that it was time to share my story, knowledge and experiences.
I you want a copy of my article, please let me know.
Throw away your salt shaker and use Morton's "No Salt" instead. Don't worry about results. Just do it.
I bought a Meniett device and I think it helped, but it is very expensive, needs an Rx, and a minor surgery, usually done in the ENT's office.
I take Triamterine which is a diuretic, and needs an Rx of potassium to go with it.
Follow the dietery rules that your doctor recommends. They are important.
Good luck.
