But the doctors can't seem to "find an explanation" for it.

Do you have any suggestions to alleviate the pain?

I wish!! Sometimes after the vertigo episode hits and later after things settle down, the ear pain subsides. My doc says it's because the pressure is then relieved due to the rupture of the inner ear membranes (which causes the Meniere's symptoms). But until that happens, nothing relieves the pain. I am hoping that after my labyrinthectomy in 2 weeks, I won't have to deal with the pain or the vertigo anymore. It's a long rehab but after 8 years of this, I have had enough. How are you doing?

I have ear pain constantly - with and without full episodes. They always hurt - it's just to a different degree. Sometimes it feels like a wave of pain is going thru my head from ear to ear. Does that make sense?

My doctor told me he didn't think any one of the main three surgeries would work for me - he called me an anomaly. I don't think it was a compliment!

I'm seeing a new specialist next month. Hopefully she will have more answers for me.

Facial and ear pain are lesser known symptoms of TMJD. I would really recommend you look into a TMJD consultaion, or if you have the means, upper cervical or nucca care. Before surgery. Be well.

We've talked about this on another thread - I've also done a little research since then. In Japan and European countries, they have a theory that Meniere's may be caused by a virus; the same virus that causes cold sores and chicken pox. Under this premise, ear and neck/facial pain could possibly be caused by swollen lymph nodes and pressure on surrounding nerves.

It's a theory but something to think about.

Yes, virus may be the root cause as well. I had a droopy eye lid and facial pain for years, when it progressed to low tone hearing loss I started seeing a Nucca chiro. All symptoms have greatly improved. Hearing is slowly getting better.

yes I get ear and facial pain for about a week before I get a full blown attack. I figure it has to do with the pressure caused by fluid build up in my inner ear. after an attack the pain goes away but I am still left with the dizziness and some fullness in my affected ear plus a bit more hearing loss. this disease is pretty awful

Greetings. I am new here, and just replied to someones post. I thought I would share the content in a new thread? Here was my post:
I had been taking xanax, then klonopin for what I thought was panic attacks for many years. They were apparantly masking my early MD symptoms for years. When I stopped taking them, BAM. I got Shingles (probably a strees induced outbreak). That lasted for about a year! Spinning and dizzy also the whole time. Since then, the MD has come to the forefront (I have read Herpes (SHingles) can act as a catalyst of sorts, bringing the MD full throtle.
Ears ring 24/7, of course the vertigo spins too. If I am walking and close my eyes, I will fall. Was jiust diagnosed lasyt week and feeling the doom of the future. Hearing in left ear is going fast.

I imagine that pain is yet to come, have ear pain, one insanely bad episode sent me to ER. My face does feel ...weird, around the cheek area and hand jitters, the latter may be unrelated...finding out today

I use to have a lot of ear pain but it stopped.. I had a few months ago had it in my left ear.

When I'm at my worst my whole head feels like it is ready to explode due the the pressure (including ears and facial pressure). I have a rather unusual solution. Per my request, my daughter bought me a massager with many different attachments for Christmas. I use it on my head, face, around the ears and the neck. I get a great deal of releaf from it. Hope this helps.

I am the one who originally started this post so it's been interesting to read all the replies. Thanks. I also thought I'd give an update. I had my labyrinthectomy last May and have been vertigo-free (no spinning room) for 9 months!! Couldn't be happier about that. But it's been a long haul. Surgery went fine. It's the other symptoms that have taken a long time to either resolve or become milder. The dizziness (lightheadedness) lasted a long time, even with vestibular therapy but it's MUCH better now. I still have to be very careful with balance and have to do the vestibular exercises religiously but that's no big deal. The nausea and facial pain and tinnitus are milder and intermittent now and I have learned to deal with those symptoms in a variety of ways. Adjusting to losing all the hearing in the surgical ear has not been difficult as I was losing it over time anyway, due to the Meniere's. And a CROS hearing aid system helps a lot. All in all, if you any of you have tried all the lesser invasive treatments and are at your wit's end, I would definitely recommend the surgery, as long as it's at a place where you have a good surgeon and really good staff with good support from that staff once you go home. Here's to a life without vertigo!
