Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.

Diet-Triggered Vertigo

Hi there.. I'm Meg, and this is my first post ever :)

I'm 23 years old, and am in the process of getting diagnosed for my severe chronic vertigo. It is now narrowed down to Meniere's Disease or Vestibular Migraines, with symptoms pointing more towards Meniere's.

I want to hear what triggers your vertigo.. Diet or otherwise. I do not know anyone in my real life that has this so I feel very alone and lost, and would like any advice or words of wisdom that you can give me.

It seems that heavy amounts of sodium trigger an attack for me, and chocolate/caffeine. I seem to still experience vertigo randomly with herbal (no-caffeine) teas. What could be the cause of that??

I had my last bad vertigo attack last Monday evening, and I've been bed-ridden this week since. I'm getting sick and tired and bored.

I would love to hear any words of advice, recipes, things to avoid, questions, your personal triggers, medications or things that help prevent an attack, or relief during an attack, safe foods, particular elimination diet instructions, etc. etc.

Also my biggest symptom is the room is constantly swaying. I feel my head is a fish bowl lol. Is there anything that can be done to get rid of the rocking vision?

Meg, i dont know where you live but you should run, dont walk to an Upper Cervical Care doctor. I have suffered with Menieres disease for many years and tried drugs, MRIs, Cat scans, many, many different kinds of docs, but no relief. I was led to Dr. Ray Drury in Charlotte, NC. He has given me my life back. Contact him for referrals in your area. Google Upper Cervical Care and watch the short videos. You can watch some on Dr. Drurys website also. Send him an email or call him. He is awesome. Good luck.

Diet is a number one thing I watched Yeah Caffeine is bad I stopped using coffee even de caf ,no chocolate or any soda that has it.

Salt too is a trigger but that usually with me was a hearing. .thing

It is very possible to have BOTH Meniere's and Migraine Associated Vertigo or Vesitibular migraine. They often walk together, and act very similar. Diet for me is 75% of the battle. I stay very low sodium, eating only fresh foods. When I first started the diet for meniere's I didn't realized I filled my diet with migraine triggers. I have to be mindful of both. I was given a list similar to this at Vanderbilt when MAV was suspected for me. I was to follow it for 6 weeks plus stay low sodium. Then I was balance tested. The dx was burned out menier's with migraine associated vertigo. I take a migraine preventative and follow a paleo diet with removal of foods I know that set me off. My biggest triggers... onions, canned tomatoes, ANYTHING Smoked or cured, fresh pineapple, artificial sweeteners, MSG and bananas. 5 years ago I could eat them all, now I can't touch them.


Here is the link to the migrain triggers over half my diet was wiped out, but i managed. I can cheat with some of these foods again, occasionally, but never with the ones listed above. salt is a huge culprit in menieres disease. i am on a 1200 mg of salt diet a day. it sucks but it is a big trigger. also alcohol, caffeine and chocolate. i cheat and eat a little chocolate each day...you have to have some fun. my doc calls it the menieres weight loss diet and that is so try. if i eat too much salt i will surely have a severe episode...good luck to you. you are not alone.
