Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.
has anyone out there ever tried betahistine also known as serc. it is approved in every country for the treatment of menieres disease except in the u.s. i can order it from canada but wonder what thoughts anyone might have on its usefulness in treating menieres and what side effects you might have developed. i really appreciate any input. thanx.

I was on it but was terribly sick with it. I've always had a sensitive stomach so medications don't agree with me. It gave me acid reflux and bloating so I didn't tolerate it well. It is expensive but for those that can tolerate it, I understand it works quite well.

Hi Mulkie,the doc's put me on this at the very beginning 6 years ago when my problems started,an to be honest it made me feel worse,it gave me awful headaches,it made my ears so full that I felt deaf,so I wouldnt try it again....but loads of MD sufferers are taking it,with good results so it might agree with u,I suppose it's just trying things to see if they work :)

I have no side effects from Serc. I have no problems ordering it from a Canadian pharmacy. I am on a low dose though (8 mg, 3 times a day). Seems like everyone else takes 16 or 32 mg at a time, so maybe that is why I have no side effects.

Hi I have been on it since Sept 2014 and yes it did make me sick at first but I sucked it up and stuck with it. Went 29 without vertigo and them just a small spell. Now with that said just last Sat I have a violent and I mean violent vertigo attack but I think it was due to MAV. Even with that attack I am doing good and now getting the meds from Canada and don't know yet how different it will be. It does cost a lot less. I wish you well.

I tried it and broke out in hives. It was awful. My ENT then said that my body is rejecting it.

I am on SERC 16 3 times a day. It very quickly made my tinnitus very loud. On the plus side, it has toned down my vertigo attacks a little, but they are still pretty bad and knock me out for a day or more at a time. I am on a trial period of 3 months followed by a month off and then a month back on. I have heard higher doses can be more beneficial for those SERC works for.

On a SERC 16 trial, 3 months on (vertigo toned down but still knocks me out for a day or so) now 2 weeks in to a month off ( had 3 attacks like never before, earth shattering) Not looking forward to the next 2 weeks. Cannot wait to be back on SERC. But my tinnitus on SERC became hugely worse and has not improved. Not the miracle cure but vertigo is not as bad, but still not great.

I do the "American version" made by a compounding pharmacy. 16 x 3 dosage and insurance pays most of it. I also noticed that my tinnitus got markedly louder on it. I am so glad to hear that others have had the same experience. I also had endolymphatic sac decompression surgery, so can't say for sure if the meds have changed anything.
