Meniere's Disease Support Group
Meniere's disease is a balance disorder of the inner ear. The symptoms of Meniere's are variable; not all sufferers experience the same symptoms. However, "classic Meniere's" is considered to comprise the following four symptoms: Periodic episodes of rotary vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, and a sensation of fullness or pressure in one or both ears.
I've been on a low salt diet (more or less) since 2008 and it's very difficult. You really can't go out to eat unless you check the menu for sodium count and plan your day around it to stay within the 1500-2000 count. At my worst I have ringing in both ears, sounds like very high wind or a strong waterfall and and power tool off in the distance. Sometime this will go on for a couple of days. It's very difficult to block it out to keep from going crazy. Besides the Meniere's I am legally blind and suffer from severe allergies. There are days that all I can do is lay around. Not exactly how I planned to retire. I must have been pretty bad in previous and am paying for it in this life. I take it in stride and try to stay positive. I value the rare good day and have starting working out with weights to try to improve my health. It helps to have the support and understanding of those who know what we are going through.
Take Care and May you have many good days ahead.
None of us are being punished, life holds challenges for all of us. I try to keep focused on others things and talk in my head a lot, for distractions.
I hope you find some relief.
Have you tried HCTZ? (Hydrochlorithiazide) Hope I spelled that correctly.
It isn't a magic cure-all pill but it does help sometimes to alleviate some of effects of too much salt.
Also, caffeine makes the tinnitus worse. One cup of coffee, or even a glass of iced tea and mine gets to the point that I can't hear a darned thing the tinnitus is so loud.
Also chocolate will make it worse too. I know, there are so few things we can eat and enjoy already and it seems like those are being restricted as well.
I know it's going to hurt and make the buzzsaw in my ears louder, but I allow myself one good cup of coffee per week and I drink water with everything else.
Hope this helps you.
Going to see the Dr tomorrow Guess I'll see what she has to say.
Life goes on
