Hello, I've had MD for 30 years and up until two months ago it was just an inconvenience a few times a year. Then two month ago it came on with a vengeance and I have suffered every day since. I ended up in the hospital for three days last week. I have developed a terrible case of GERD and acid reflux probably from all the meds and starting the very low sodium diet. For the past 4 weeks I have lived on mashed potatoes, oatmeal and scrambled eggs. Still vomited daily. By the time I arrived at the hospital I was terribly dehydrated and my potassium was very low.
I'm now on Zofran and Carafate for the stomach and vomiting along with the Omeprozole and Zantec. I use Ativan at night for the Meniere's as Vallium just didn't set well with me.
I would appreciate any ideas you have for me to get this GERD under control so I could increase my food intake as I've lost too much weight and get stronger to fight the Meniere's.

Start a list of food products that affect you when you have GERD. My wife has it bad and it almost always is triggered by some tomato product. She really has to watch out for this. It often takes time for the symptoms to settle down because the esophagus needs to heal and the reflux needs to end. Drink LOTS of water with your potassium. Potassium is very hard on the stomach and can also trigger your problem. This is a catch 22 because you need potassium supplement if you are taking a diuretic. If levels of potassium get to low it can be life threating. If your GERD dose not get better in a couple of weeks, get back with your doctor, you may need to be scoped for more advanced issues. This procedure is not bad because they sedate you. It is very important that this be done because the conditions associated with negative findings are often treatable if caught early on.
I am sorry to be so blunt but you need to keep in close contact with your doctor till this situation changes. There are other medications that work and finding the one for you maybe a trial and error situation.

Sorry for your tough days.
About the GERD.... Have you tried sleeping with your head elevated? Have you made sure you eat early before bed? The potassium can be obtained through food too... try acorn squash. It has very high potassium levels. You can go online and find out which foods are good for that... Natural coconut water is also good. You can get that at Target. Check for sodium levels though. That can also hydrate you if you can avoid the vomiting.
