MCTD Support Group
Mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) or Sharp's syndrome is a human autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks the body. MCTD combines features of polymyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and systemic scleroderma and is thus considered an overlap syndrome. MCTD commonly causes joint pain/swelling, Raynaud phenomenon, muscle inflammation, and scarring of...

I was dx'ed with mctd several years ago. I tried doing research on it because my doc didn't really explain it to me. He just said I had it and would end up with other immune disorders due to having a severe case of epstein bar virus. He was right...I also have IBS, Renauds, Sjogrens, being tested on regular basis for RA and am about to be tested for MS. I also have fibro and chronic fatigue.
However none of those things have the kinda speech issues I have been having for years now. Like yall I also want to say one word and say another instead. I also have problems finding the right word to use....usually I will just say something easy for it or use a made up word. I also garble my words alot. Lately I have noticed a new one...Just in the last few days I have been repeating the same word 3 times...yes exactly 3 times each time it happens and I can't stop it at the 2nd time even though my brain is trying to make it stop. Yes it is very annoying and frustrating. My husband just helps me and other family just think Im faking it all so they completely ignore it (which is actually exactly what I want them to do...wouldn't it make them mad to know this!... :-) ..)
I would also like to know what causes it especially since I have no clue what MCTD even is! Irish
The whole issue of substituting the wrong words? This happens to almost all older workers. First, it's often soundalike words-- "prune" for "prone" and then it's lookalike words "that" and "then" and sometimes it becomes words that mean the same thing or something similar "honesty" and "trustworthy" and in its final stages, it can be substituting completely unrelated words.
I think this is age-related and the basic etiology has nothing to do with MCTD, though I could easily believe that MCTD could make it worse. But man, ANY worker we had over 50 will start doing this. Then I started doing it myself at 51 or so. People who consume alcohol due it more. And when workers do this, they are completely unaware of it, and can miss it when they are checking their own work. They are always stunned when a manager or quality control person points this out to them-- sometimes to the point of believing people are plotting against them to get them to leave their jobs. But it will happen to almost everyone.
I also think that using computers a lot is another risk factor, but can't prove it. But it's a terrible problem in my old business.
