My brother is 17 about to be 18 about to graduate high school, I am 23 just graduated college.
Our parents were unfit parents and both of us were given to our maternal grandparents.
Now me and my brother live with my grandparents, plus our mom lives with us now too.
My mom is a recovering alcoholic.
My whole teenage life I was kept on an extremely strict leash because mom pretty much ruined her life as a teenager. Drugs, sex, partying, dropped out of school, etc. My grandparents were afraid I'd turn out like her because I was a girl. Yeah.. I didn't.
My brother is becoming like my mother. He is stealing money from us. $10, $15, $20. He skips school, he leaves the house in the middle of the night. My mom has a herniated disc and takes lorcets, and he steals those. She caught him red-handed and put 2 and 2 together when she noticed that a few would disappear every few days.
We found shrooms in his room a few days ago. I caught him smoking cigs and my grandma found marijuana a few months back.
Last night when I went into his room to give him something, his door was locked. When he opened the door, he was very clearly high on something. He looked awful. But I didn't say anything, I said "You look tired" and he just grunted and shut the door.
Mom caught him leaving one night at 1am and returning about 30 minutes later.
He has been pulled over 4 times in the past 5 months for DUI, speeding, trespassing/illegal parking, and no seatbelt. He has lied about every single instance and has been bumming money off of all of us until we finally got the truth out of him. He was also in a wreck, but this was almost 1 year ago before all this mess started happening. He quit his job (we later found out he was fired due to a failed drug test, but the point is he lied) and he cusses at my grandparents and mom. They pay for his car, his gas, his insurance, they've paid his tickets. I pay his cell phone bill since he lost his job (I own the account with verizon)
My grandparents are tired. They're tired of raising kids, they're tired of trying to enforce rules he won't obey.
Me and my mom are trying to figure out what to do. Me and him have a rocky relationship because I ratted him out for cigarettes and marijuana. He won't tell me anything anymore. It makes me want to cry because he's no longer my baby brother, he's turned into this person that I don't know.
Please help

He was skipping school smoking cigs, pot used ecstacy, and shrooms. Lied, stole from us and pawned everything he owned. He was caught with drugs and the guy he was with (an adult) was selling drugs, the drugs were in my sins car and he was arrested.
We have been supportive trying to see him through this terrible time. Now we are on third time, he is now 18 and an adult to the court system. A little over a month ago he was released from jail and I think he has finally gotten the message.
We were enabling him!!! He always had a place to stay, he always had food to eat, he always had transportation, he always had a phone.
He knows now that if he screws up again he will not be allowed to live here with us and we will drop all support for him. He knows we LOVE him, but he cannot use and abuse us. He either gets his life straightened out or he can go do whatever. If we find he breaks the law we WILL turn him in...period.
He has been paying his own fines, and he knows if he does not he will go back to jail, he does not have a car now and no insurance. If he wants a car and insurance then he needs to get a job that will allow him to pay for them.
He is active in a 12 step in AA (most in AA have dual addictions) goes at least one a day, active in a local church and is attending school to get his hs diploma.
I am praying you all can see that tough love is the best love.
I had to have my son arrested for written checks on my account. That was the hardest thing I ever did, but in some ways I think I might have saved his life.
I would rather he hate me and be alive than me enabling him and find he overdoesed and dead.
