Marijuana Addiction & Recovery Support Group
This community is dedicated to those looking to overcome their addiction to marijuana, a drug produced from parts of the cannabis plant. Join the group to find support among people who are also looking to cease their habit of smoking marijuana, share your experience, and get advice. It's not easy to kick the habit, but together we can.
There are very many more healthy ways to deal with depression and anxiety, and for all of them, abstaining from intoxicants is only a mere beginning to the process. Start by abstaining from the weed. Only then can you get a true gauge for how well your medication works; only then can you get true benefit from meditation if you choose; only then can you actually feel the feelings on a deeper level and let the healing begin; only then can you regain some of your original vitality; only then will the exercise and diet be able to have a more full affect.
I know some people who were able to abstain from intoxicants and regain some happiness from this online forum. I know way way more people who needed to join and in-person support group to really dig deep and face their reality. I strongly recommend it.
You wrote that you are an emotional wreck without weed. The good news is that this means you have emotions! That's a victory in and of itself. It is so much better to have ingredients to work with than to be in a void of emotions. It is difficult for sure, especially when you've been used to self-medicating for ages. Yet, if you want your life to get better, you'll need to face this sh*t. Again, I strongly recommend you supplement this sparse online support with an in person support group. I know that AA is the most prevalent group out there. Many people at those groups don't have alcohol as their main drug of choice, but know that they need to abstain from booze too if they intend on staying clean from weed or whatever else it is they face. The tools used in any 12 step group go far beyond just abstaining from the intoxicant of choice, and in fact they dig down to some of the roots of depression and anxiety. You'll notice that only the 1st step of any 12 step group talks about intoxicants. That's why if you are really serious about quitting and moving forward in a healthier way, even an AA group can seriously help a self-medicating pot head.
Glad you've gone over a month and glad you are going to be working with an addictions counselor. Both of those are huge steps. Don't overlook your progress. Congrats. Keep us posted.
i've noticed that when things get tough... all i want is a joint. SimpleReal is 110% right that MJ is just a temporary bandaid for this pain. i self-medicate with ways that can provide instant relief but always forget that it's detrimental in the long run. i'm digging myself deeper into a hole that i'm desperately trying to get out of.
not to sound pedantic, but the more difficult methods are hard because they don't take the pain away immediately even though they provide a longer-lasting and healthier way to manage stress/emotions.
you have my encouragement from miles away. believe in yourself! i believe in you!
Am proud to say that this time around it is totally different. In 26 years I've never been 10 months sober. The difference is that I've not just been journaling and attending this another more active online forum (https://www.marijuana-anonymous.org/connection-forum) but I've been attending in-person meetings and have made literally dozens of new friends whom are totally sober but used to be total pot heads. We check in daily. I am able to be around my old pot buddies, but if I don't have any reason to be with them...like a live show or outing, I avoid just sitting around with them while they get high on a couch. I'm not necessarily dissing my old friends, but I'm giving myself the opportunity to live a much healthier, happier, proactive and creative life. I can't deal with the unhealthy dead weight. And the steps too have been transformative. That's just my perspective.
Otherwise, while in relapse-land, what happens is people just disappear from this board. May anyone reading this truly take a deep look at your desires and at what is stopping you and ask yourselves if you are willing to make more fundamental changes than just trying to cut something out.
