Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. It is now one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the U.S. Lyme disease is caused by infection with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and is primarily transmitted to humans as well as dogs, horses and other domesticated animals by the bite of infected ticks.
Babesiosis is a malaria-like protozoa illness that invades, infects, and kills the red blood cells.
Symptoms include fatigue, night sweats, chills, fever, shortness of breath, heart palpitations, headache, dark urine, muscle pain, joint pain, nausea, and jaundice.
Treatment is an anti-malarial (often Mepron) combined with an antibiotic (often Zithromax, Biaxin, or Ketek).
Many people with Babesiosis seem to herx on day three and week three of treatment. It can take some time to eradicate it. It seems that four months is often the minimum treatment time or re-treatment is necessary. Longer treatment is not unusual.
If you take Mepron, it is important to eat something fatty (cheese, peanut butter, etc.) when you take it so it will be absorbed properly.
Your doctor will likely want to treat this now, so she may switch your meds.
I don't know why it takes so long to eradicate it, but from many of those I have corresponded with four months seems to be the minimum treatment time. Longer treatment is often necessary.
Some people can work with these diseases, some cannot. It depends on the severity level of your symptoms. Do your best to listen to your body (even when you don't like what it is saying!) and do not push past your limitations.
