Lyme Disease Support Group
Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. It is now one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the U.S. Lyme disease is caused by infection with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and is primarily transmitted to humans as well as dogs, horses and other domesticated animals by the bite of infected ticks.
Your husband needs unconditional support, patience, hugs, help without asking, and HUMOR!! He didn't choose this. It's so devastating to not be able to fulfill your obligations to your family. Try hard to put yourself in his shoes. It's difficult, I know. I NEVER imagined I would be this sick. And I completely underestimated the impact it would have on me. Good luck :)
one in your area. This is a very tough illness to understand as you already know and to treat as
well. I am retired and so the 'work' part is not a big issue. It was however when I first got ill
some 12 years ago. I still have mainly myself to rely on as I live on my own. I had to stop working
and apply for disability at the time. It took two years. It's not always easy to get. I was
fortunate to find a support group a few years into this and that made a big difference. I was
way over my head in the beginning. I went to personal counseling to deal with all the
emotions that were and still are coming up. I saw the film 'Under Our Skin'. Have you seen
that? It's available on dvd if you have one. It's pretty intense and dramatic. so be prepared.
But it does give a good overview of Lyme and what various people go through. It is very
educational in that way. You could also suggest family or friends watch it, if they don't
really know about Lyme first hand. You used to be able to rent it on New Flicks also. Yes,
learn all you can and reach out to others as well. Care givers need support just like the
person who's dealing with a chronic illness. My very best wishes to you and I hope you will
keep us filled in when you're able.
