Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the Northern Hemisphere. It is now one of the fastest growing infectious diseases in the U.S. Lyme disease is caused by infection with the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria, and is primarily transmitted to humans as well as dogs, horses and other domesticated animals by the bite of infected ticks.
Please note that the link was written probably almost a decade ago so some things have changed since then: Such as Ehrlichiosis instead of the recent anaplasmosis. That's not the only difference, just saying.

I don't know if you are aware that the ' best' doctors to treat for Lyme are usually members of ILADS.org. (Not to say there are some really strange one too---- didn't used to be that way!) You can read a lot on their web site.
They have a 'patient-conferred' title ---- LLMD (stands for Lyme Literate Medical Doctor). That also has been preempted by some 'strange' sorts. :(
