Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats (like viruses and bacteria), and healthy cells and tissue. I actually found this site when I went looking for Gastric issues. Then I found all the support groups. I have been dealing with Lupus for a number of years. The last 10 have been very calm and steady. This year I experienced the passing of my father which was quick and troubling. He died of colon Cancer which had met to his bones. It was sudden and one of the hardest things to watch. That was the end of April.
Flash forward to July. Started feeling tired and got this stomach ache. Was thinking it was acid or gastritis (hence why I was here for that). I have been tired and not myself of late. Dropping weight. Well anyway, The doctor ran tests today and my kidney tests are a little elevated. My BUN and Creatinine (38 and 1.31 respectively). I don't know.... It just freaked me out I guess.

DO see the nephrologist, and based on your tests what's your doc saying?
I'm sure the tests freaked you out a bit...they would bother any rational person. I've had some freaky tests of late as well.
However, with some Lupus patients emotional events are triggers. So, it makes sense to me that your lupus would be out of control just after the death of your father. It's possible all you need is time, some extra meds (steroids anyone??), and some serious rest/stress reduction.
You've given of yourself...now it's time to take some time for you. I know that's easier said than done, but with lupus - it really does come down to : Pay now...or pay later.
Funny you mention prednisone...one of my doctors said taking it would make me diabetic. My rheumy believes that Plaquenil will stop any Lupus flares, so she never believes I am having one.
So the million dollar question...how long do flares last? I suppose there are too many variables to be able to know for sure.
I've had flares last as long as 36 months. Of course, we were trying to find "the right combination" of meds during that time, but I still get flares that can last months, and steroids are always a must to get me through them.
SUPER-HIGH dosages of prednisone is harmful, but mild dosages aren't.
