Can't Eat

Wow! I thought I would love this problem. I am nauseous, not at all hungry and feel so awful! I started on Plaquenil last week and am back to 10 mg prednisone as well as Mobic. This started before the Plaquenil. Also running a low grade fever. I go back to the RA tomorrow am. I think when I told her I lost 7 pounds since last week that freaked her out a bit. I am so weak and feel so gross. AND really bummed bc I was due to go to NYC next week and i know I can't.. SUGGESTIONS? Thanks, friends. I hate this so much - I said that in my sleep last night! I had problems on higher doses of Plaquenil and had to eat with the lower doses. I also had problems on Medrol, a steroid like Prednisone. I still take Medrol but only at 2 mg per day with food. I dont take Plaquenil anymore. I also had nausea with Mobic and had to eat with it. Had to stop taking it because I got a GI bleed. I take Prevacid 2 times a day. That is all I can tell you.

I've taken plaquenil at varying doses from 3 different doctors for about a year each (couldn't convince them it wasn't working for me). It made me feel like garbage 100% of the time (nausea, fatigue and subsequent depression), whereas my flareups at that point were only about 20% of the time. I'm still searching for the right treatment, actually starting methotrexate on Monday. But it is imperative that you find a doctor who will really listen to you, and who makes you feel valued as a person. Otherwise finding a viable treatment plan is a much longer process. Remember, only you know how you feel and you are your own best advocate. Hope you find some relief asap

In my first flare I was nauseated and lost 35 in a couple of months. I just couldn't get the food in my mouth. Every time I had a flare for 7 years I would loose 20 to 25 lbs. It wasn't until I had been on plaquenil for quite a long time that the nausea finally got much, much better. (It took 7 years for a rheumy to take me seriously.) When I had been feeling pretty good on plaquinil for a number of years, I went to see my rheumy after a few years and he said, "You're fat!" I said that is because I feel better. He told me that people with lupus produce something that people with cancer do which causes them to lose weight.

So my advice is to be patient. Plaquinel takes a long time to work and you can still have flares when you are on it. The hope is your flares will be shorter and less severe, according to my rheumy. And that is how it worked with me.

Every medicine affects each of us differently so my advice is to not discount any medicines until you try them. MTX works great and makes another person sick. I think that the prednisone will help you get through this.
