Lupus is an auto-immune disease in which the immune system cannot distinguish between threats (like viruses and bacteria), and healthy cells and tissue. Hi, Rachel, and welcome to this forum of nice people. I hope you will be encouraged here. Autoimmune diseases can often isolate us and make us feel alone, because people don't understand how we feel and our illness prevents us from participating in many activities. You might want to check and see if there is a Lupus support group in your town, because sometimes it's helpful to have a person we can see, rather than simply an online person. If you have questions about lupus, you might want to read some of the older posts, as they are filled with lots of information. Best wishes to you.

It can be a lonely feeling. Glad you got on. This is a first big step in coming out of the cave! LOL! Sometimes it feels like that to me. I get to where I dont want to leave the house. Nest, if you will. But looking for the first step is the hardest. Now, it is time to call around and look for a support group in your area or even a group of folks supporting each other through different chronic illnesses. Call the local hospital and your rheumatologist to get some ideas where to look. A big local church might also be of assistance in finding a group. But stick with us too! There will be times we need a friend also!

Hello Rachel,
We all here understand the isolating feeling of just being diagnosed with Lupus. The diagnosis of Lupus at first comes as a huge shock and then slowly it all develops into a learning-process and that is where this website (Daily Strenghts) comes in "handy", where we can exchange our experiences and learn as much as we can from doctors and each other about this rare disease...
