Father diangonsed with lung cancer

My father was recently diagnosed with lung cancer after months of being treated for IBS. His complaints were loss of appetite, stomach pains and lower back pain. His primary Dr. kept telling him that it was IBS. So one day I went with him to a Dr. apt and said he needed a GI work up. So an apt was set up for about a month down the road. About a week later he ended up in the ER for stomach pains and nausea. He was able to get in the a few days later and met up with a PA for pre op for his GI. She decides to do a chest x ray and finds a mass in his upper RT lung. Cat scan , biopsy, and PET scan and some labs say its adenocarcinoma and neuroendocrine. Met with the surgeon and this Wednesday is the day of his surgery. Loved the surgeon and so does my dad and the rest of the family. He feel after he gets out the tumor and the chemo the Oncologist that he will have a great outcome. During all this my hubby and I found out that we where having twin boys and when we told my dad he broke down crying. Mom said this will give him some extra fight since he had all girls and of the 4 grand kids he has now there is only 1 boy. I am praying for a miracle or 2 for my dad.

Well Vanderhoef I'm praying with you. I'm 58 year old male , father of 3 with 2 grand kids and 1 on the way. I don't understand the terms IBS or PA or GI work up. I opted out of having a lung removed. I was informed that chemo and radiation would not work for my situation. I also have Adenocarcinoma and I'm well into stage 3. My illness is a little easier to deal with because there is not much hope for a cure. I feel nervous about posting on this site because I tend to say things wrong and people take it the wrong way. The last thing I would ever want to do is upset anyone with an illness like this..
I have a huge energy loss, I do eat well but I don't know what I feel like eating. Food doesn't appeal to me but once I start eating , I eat well and quality. If I can keep my weight up then I know I'm doing good. I go out of my way to be kind to people and this has an enormous effect on myself and anybody around me. Stress can be a huge issue but if dealt with properly then the stress can be a small issue..
Like your dad I'm tired a lot but I manage to get a good nights sleep and have a rest here and there during the day .I'm here to chat anytime you wish Vanderhoef

Hello there Vanderhoef, I am also praying for your father and your family. My past 4 yrs in the 'cancer world' have taught me patience, and lack thereof, belief because you have to believe, and the significance of time. Time spent waiting, time spent wondering, time is of the essence. But enough of that let me share my Dads cancer run with you; hopefully it will inspire and boost your spirits! 2010 he was diagnosed with Stage IV adenocarcinoma NSCLC. The mass in his right lung was originally 8.5 x 5 cm. After aggressive chemo/radiation prior to surgery it shrank to 6.5 x 4 cm. The doctors were successful in removing the mass along with the upper left lobe. I won't lie, it was a rough go of it. The radiation was the toughest part, but here we are 4 years later and he is still going stong! My Dad is 76 yrs old and is now in what they call a "maintenance" program. He has periodic CAT scans which determine the necessity of chemo treatment. This usual consists of once every 3 weeks for 9 weeks. Yes he hates it but he is determined and has a wonderful outlook and thats the most important part! Keep your Dads spirits up, do your homework, keep a journal. There will be ups and downs but I believe with the right attitude and mix of treatments your Dad will do just fine! Love to you and yours and congrats on the twins!!

My mother was just recently diagnosed with lung cancer; her doctors originally thought it was IBS as well. I don't understand how that happens, but when I read your story it sounded similar to mine. My prayers are with you and your family.
