If he has made this clear about not being a long-distane relationship type of guy then I think you don't have so much more you can do. Not everyone can manage being in a long-distance relationship.
You have to do what you think is best for yourself, and if you wish to stay friends with him then that's something only you can decide. I wouldn't have felt too good about it if I would have been interested in wanting him to be more than a friend to me, and if having hopes for something more to be happening it would only crush me down seeing him getting together with another girl.
A long-distance relationship will work if both parts agree on making it work. If one person has no interest in it, it just won't work. Whether you two will get back together in the future only time will tell. But right now it seemes as he isn't interested in this, so in a way it might be wiser for you to try moving on from this, and continue living as your life developes...
