Before meeting, I thought I loved him and the same for him but my personal belief and his is you can't really know for sure if you love someone until you spend time with each other in-person.
You're not the only one who has done this, many people in LDRs met on-line and there's nothing wrong with you for doing it. You just need to be be cautious and realize that on-line/phone/texting is a lot different than actually being together on a much more personal level in-person.
As for a lot of jealousy and misunderstanding to work through as Hopeless mentioned, that can happen with some people but it certainly doesn't happen with all people in LDRs. My partner and I never had any jealousy issues to work through, there's never been any misunderstandings between us. We trust each other 100% so we have no reason to be jealous.
My boyfriend and I didn't meet online, but that's where our relationship started. We spent 7 months emailing, IM'ing, texting and talking on the phone before we met in person and were LD for 4 years before he moved down here to live with me.
It's not easy and though it's really exciting now in the beginning of it all, it will get significantly harder after you meet and begin to develop deeper feelings.
I agree with hopeless, make sure you can really trust her before you get too involved. Make sure she is who she says she is (as in video chatting lol) and that you two have the same goals at all times. Communication is REALLY important, make sure you both talk about what kind of communication you expect, and what kind of communication will and will not be ok. Some people want to communicate throughout the day, others not so much, some want to know everything you're doing when you do it and others just want to hear about your day at the end of it. Voice your needs and wants so you don't give too much or too little.
As far as jealousy goes it will depend on you and your girlfriend. I never found myself jealous of girls my boyfriend hung out with but I was never happy when those girls were ones that he'd slept with, but those are my own insecurities and I did my best not to let it interfere. If you know your girlfriend turns out to be uncomfortable with certain situations involving other girls, make sure to keep the communication open and clear. Trust is key and though it's difficult so far away, she needs to trust that you are and will be faithful.
Enjoy this time of getting to know each other, it's the best!
