It's an unpleasant fact of life that as we age, people we know die at an increasing frequency. That is one of the things we earn by outliving our peers. When my mom was 80, she told me, "Everybody I know is dead." And my wife was shocked that about 20% of her college class at Barnard had died by time they reached 60.
Losses can definitely increase our feelings of loneliness. I spent a few hours the other day missing my wife, my best friend, another dear friend who died of cancer a couple of years ago, and then I started missing college classmates who have died. It's painful, but when I became less morose, I felt privileged to have known them.
I think I even miss my mom a little. She did terrible things to my wife, and to my family. But a few years before she died (last year) I did some work on myself, I "fixed" my dysfunctional marriage and family, and went back to work at work I love. And I reached out to my mom, whose last words were "Act as if I am dead already" - I had a few nice holidays with her, and when she needed help after dialysis I dutifully picked her up 3x a week and made sure she had her medications and food. We cannot do anything about when people die, but at least we can try to make our relationships with the ones we care about healthy, so we have fewer regrets when they pass?
There's a Yiddish saying: the only time you have to go to synagogue is the Shabbos before you die - get it? Since we don't know when we might die, it keeps us going... no regrets.
Take care, maybe you will be relieved when the doctors' appointments are over :)
