Loneliness is more than the feeling of wanting company or wanting to do something with another person. Loneliness is a feeling of being cut off, disconnected and alienated from other people. Long story short...My son and I befriended 'the old man with 2 dogs" next door. we kinda took him under our wings and became good friend. My son was 12 at the time and we even went so far to make him my son's godfather because they got along really well. I am one of those fun outgoing "busy bee" type of people. Got a husband, kid and a job. on the weekends and during the summer we have a lot of fun going on trips etc...
Here's the problem... He is so mis trustful of people and the world. he alienates everyone he does know including family members and hes often harsh with peole and definatly lack people skills. he often guilts me into how loney his life is and how I am his only friend. I tried to get him involved in church, community groups, senior citizen groups, bingo etc.... in an effort to meet other people. I get so stressed out being responsible for his happiness. When i tell him how I have things to do with my own family or other friends, he goes on aand on to say how lonely he is and how he has no one to take care of him. Hes 62 with a lot of health problems. I'm 49 with a husband, 19 year old kid and work. I am involved in 4 community groups and i live a pretty fun eventful life because i go out there to be involved.
It's so stressful. Where finally at the point that he accepts my decision to have my own life but he then goes on to remind me how alone he is a.d when i stick to my guns, he accuses my of not caring. i remind him that we are all responsible to a certain degree for our own happiness. Was I wrong?

If you only know one thing about me, it should be _____________________.

I just had a conversation like this recently with a friend of mine, she tries to spend time with me and get me to hang out with her friends and what not, but I've told her numerous times that I really am not that much of a social person and don't really hang out in groups much, I more enjoy spending time with one or two other people, not big groups or anything. She on the other hand is a very social person with many friends. I was the person with only very few friends, so I would feel pretty lonely whenever she'd be in the company of someone else and I was alone, but I had to just accept that, as hard as it might be. It doesn't help that I also have romantic feelings for her that I've told her about, and that she doesn't feel the same in that way.
Anyways no I don't think you were wrong, to a certain degree we are indeed responsible for our own happiness, it's just still a hard thing to realize and find.
Get this... he now wants to give me power of attorney to help him with his affairs because his family will just steal everything from him if he gets sick. i have keys to his house and he has keys to mine. He house sits when we go on vacation and watches my dog. We are good friend and would be GREAT friends if he weren't so clingy. He was a super for 25 years before he fell off a ladder and went on disability. He does all my housing repairs and gives me all the free wood i need for the winter (in return, I purchased the saw and log splitter). He helps me with my car and in return i make good soups and fills his freezer with them. I wouldn't have adjusted to my mother's death so well if it werent for him. We are like best friends but he has NO outside prople.
i feel sad for him also. Lonliness is awful. i felt like an orphan when mom died and so alone. Good thing i was able to bounce back. He gets so desperate at the thought of returning to his life before my and my son introduced him to "living"ot just breathing. Overall, he is a cool guy. Yeah hes 380 pounds, health problems, angry at the world but under all of that... What a guy!
