Anyways, when she has to go to doctor appointments etc., she has to wean herself into daylight hours. Why would a person be able to go to sleep at 10pm, when you just woke up at 6pm?
Make yourself stay up or get up a few hours earlier or later. It really isn't any different then when having jet lag and making yourself adjust. You may feel disoriented and sickly because of disrupting your sleep patterns. But, it is doable.
My friend has chronic fatigue and insists it is impossible. I have seen her do it over and over when she wanted to be awake during the day, or had to because of her life situation. I concluded she decided it was a symptom to validate her illness and nothing would change her mind.
We can talk ourselves into the positive, as well as the negative. It just depends on what mind set we have chosen to take.

I like being up at 4-5 am because it is quiet in the house and I have time to myself. Of course I am tired by 8pm.
There can be many factors for unusual sleep patterns. It's a matter of figuring out why you can not get to sleep at night. A medication may make a person hyper. It can be keeping you awake based on the time taken. Look up side effects on anything you take. I do not take my multiple vitamin late, as it gives me an energy boost. Exercising late can get your body going and prevent sleep.
Being a mother, I lose sleep just worrying about my kids. We are caregivers and want everyone home and safe in bed. Often I go with only 4 hours of sleep a night.
An empty nest makes it hard to be awake when there is no one there anymore. At night it is easier to think everyone is still there sleeping in their beds. I am in that in between stage now in my life.
I am sure loneliness keeps many people awake surfing the internet for a friend. That can be addictive. I settle down and watch something on television. It helps to take my mind off my troubles and it is easier to fall asleep.
