My gf and I recently broke up (LGBT) after 4yrs and now she's not coming home. I've been alone in our apartment for about a month now and I'm just sad and tired of being alone. I dont have any family near, they are all 8hrs away.

I was just having a self talk about getting some friends. How? I'm going to join a couple of community groups and volunteer more. I lost my spouse in 2020 and my mom is not in the best of health, and I'm feeling like the new kid at my new job.....soooooo time to find few groups or get a cat. Hope you find some groups to join too (running club, red cross volunteer, political activity, whatever your interests)

It is hard to have a sudden change and a sad change at that. Consider this as your transition period. Do not think it will be suddenly okay or that you should not feel what you feel. Allow yourself to mourn. There are social groups for LGBT people and even churches. (Not all of course but many are welcoming and have LGBT members.) You can find classes in the evening, even zoom classes, or you can join an online or in person evening book club through your public library. Anything to get your mind having to think about something constructive. Go work out, take long walks, learn about plants, volunteer at anything that floats your boat. The idea is to just try new things to get your brain out of the darkness and loneliness for some time in the day and to change the routine of alone all the time except work. Listen to positive, helpful, podcasts at home (listening to others talking shifts the brain into a different mode than rumination). Reading books shifts the brain also, and you can listen to audio books, too. Make yourself a list of things you have always wanted to try or do. Force yourself to try one new thing per week. And allow yourself to feel how you feel when you are home alone. Name what you feel. I feel sad, I feel guilty, I feel abandoned, I feel ashamed they didn't love me enough, I feel bad I did X or Y. Recognizing and naming our feelings helps to stop ruminating because we recognize how we feel and talk it out within ourselves. If you need good counseling, there are LBGT oriented licensed clinical therapists or those that have a wide variety of clients. Take care of yourself now rather than having to focus on fixing a relationship. Let us know how you are doing as time goes by, Okay?
