I suffer from the loneliness that comes from not finding anything in common with the people surrounding me. I experience this because most of the people in the neighborhood where I live are either severely mentally ill or have extensive criminal backgrounds or have substance abuse problems. I know this from talking to them and from the many failed relationships I have attempted to have with them over the past two decades, so I am not merely generalizing. I am different. Mostly, though, I am disappointed in myself for not being able to find some other kind of people. Maybe there isn't anyone else like me, and I'll always be lonely and disconnected from other people - it really does feel that way, and it's a feeling I hate.

What I value is different from what my neighbors value. I don't drink alcohol to excess, use illicit drugs, commit crimes and then go bragging about it, deal drugs, bully and intimidate others, borrow money with no intention of paying it back, participate in prostitution, or go around using and hurting people. I value honesty and truthfulness, being dependable, working hard, keeping a clean-cut appearance, helping others, and being humble.

What I do have in common with my neighbors is that I am poor. I don't have any money left for saving, investing, or even charity after I've paid my rent and bought a few necessities. I've learned to live without what many people have in their lives, like a vehicle and eating out in restaurants.
