Gave up my Dog

I am feeling very sad. I gave my dog away on Saturday. She was a Velcro dog attached to me and suffered from separation anxiety. I loved her very much but I am gone from my home at work for 8 hours. I just came back to work after being off for 4 months and being with her every day. Been back to work now 2 wks and noticed that she was always a little unsettled when I got home. I am sure she thought... you are not leaving me again. Anyways, I have 2 teenage kids at home but they paid absolutely no attention to her. They will be going back to school in a month and I know my dog would have hated being left alone every day, 5 days a wk so I found her a home with a couple who just retired and would be able to spend every moment with her. I had her for 2 1/2 years and I know she will be happy. I get lonely a lot and today is the first day going home from work and I am so sad cause she will not be waiting for me at the window. I loved her so much but she did not deserve to be so alone all day. I did a selfless act but I miss her very much and I get tears of joy know that she is gonna be happier where she is. I just wish I didn't have to give her up. Feeling down

I so understand your sadness but glad she went to a good home. That should give you some semblance of comfort. Our babies are so important to us. If you should ever go through that again, they have things out now that work for dogs with separation anxiety. Hugs

I am so sorry to read this....years ago I got my first dog on my own and I was working....made him doggie door to outside and then decided that he needed a companion doggie too...so I got one of the cutest doggies for his companion and she was such a sweety...they are both gone now but I still have two different dogs and still have doggie door for them....Shep also had separation anxiety and still does just love love love me when I come home....he is fine with me leaving now....but when I come home he is so happy to see me....kisses my lips...which he only does when I have been gone and returned....

I am sad you are now without a doggie....kitties make good away pets that take care of you when your home too....so maybe a kitty?

Dlig, I felt so sad for you in reading your note. Obviously you have a great deal of love for your beloved dog...so much so that you gave him a better living situation even though you knew it would cause you pain and loneliness. That is what love is! Making sacrifices and difficult decisions that helps other. Bless you!

Hopefully the couple who adopted your dog lives near by so that you can visit sometimes? I know the first few visits may be tough, but maybe after seeing how well the dog is being loved and taken care of, it will bring joy into your heart of a great deed you did out of love for your dog.

Bill had a great suggestion of maybe getting a cat? Worth looking into. Take care!

Thanks everyone for your reply. Last night was tough getting home to no puppy at my window waiting for me. It gives me joy knowing she is getting what she needs. I did miss her tons. Loved giving her hugs. Unfortunately, a cat will not be good for me as I am highly allergic. The memories of her will forever be in my heart. I know she is in a happy home and I would not want to visit her and then leave again. I don't think that would be fair to her. She is about an away now. Every day will get better. Wow, that was a hard decision, but it truly sounds like you made that choice in the best interest of your dog, and that is how much you love him. Perhaps the new owners will be kind enough to sent you pictures. That will help when you see how well he is doing and how loved he is, in his new home.

I am sorry to hear about your situation and having to give up your dog. I have 3 dogs myself that I shared with my wife. When she left they were the only reason I kept going. When she left I was severely depressed and often thought about ending it all, but the only reason I didn't was I knew there would be no one to take care of the dogs. I still have rough days, days that I don't go out of the house or talk to anyone and they are all I have left. I feel for you and your situation, and I am glad you had the strength to do what you felt was right for your dog.

Hi SaddenPhoenix, Where is your daughter? I get sad and extremely lonely but would never hurt my kids by giving up. They are the only reason why I am not giving up. My dog is doing well and is very happy. It gives me joy and peace to know that. I do think about her often though and will never forget her.
