Anyone try to meet friends through the internet

I was wondering if anyone has tried to make a friend through the internet? My Space/Facebook...I've seen lots of people meet for dating. But I'm looking for a girlfriend who lives near me where we can do things together. I feel like my life is unbalanced with no close girlfriends and I want to try and fix it.

Hi! I wish we lived closer, because I've thought about doing the very same thing. I have several "casual" friends and we hang out in groups, but I don't have any one-on-one friends to just do "stuff" with. I've made several friends through online message boards and Yahoo groups, but only one of them lives close by. He, unfortunately, just happens to be a male, and although he and I have LOTS of things in common, we're both married and think it's best that we don't "hang out" together. So I'm back to searching for a nice, female friend in my area...but I don't know where to start!
