Daughter who is 28 years old and has OCD
deleted_user
I am struggling with my daughter's OCD. It is destroying our marriage, our family,(my son doesn't want to come and visit anymore--he lives an hour away) our home, our friends--who can't come over anymore because of my daughters fear of smells and contaminants, our relationships with other family members, my motherinlaw who asks if she will be able to see her granddaughter before she dies??(she is 81)
Our daughter is afraid of the sun because it may leave a mark on her face, she is afraid of germs, and uses paper towels or toilet paper to pick things up, she has not taken a shower since Dec. 2012 and the smell is horrendous, she has not changed her clothes since then either....combed or washed her hair....which is all piled on top of her head...
The dining room is not usable anymore....plastic bags are strewn across the table , on the floor etc and there are unopened parcels and paper towels from a year ago littered in there. I can not see the table because it is covered in plastic bags and paper towels. She is unable to clean up after herself....crumbs fall on the floor and stay there, wrappers are left on the counter everywhere. Our new bathroom with marble countertop has yellowed---the sink always clogged because she washes her bowl and cup out in the bathroom sink and cleans and dries them with toilet paper. Our upstairs bathroom is unusable also. The floor is covered in layers of plastic bags and the counter is filthy. Our family room rug is stained from pets and we have had to use natural products which don't do anything except make the stain worse--a complete waste of energy and time and money using these crappy cleaning products. We can not have friends over because of her fear of germs, smells etc. She throws temper tantrums and yells and blames me for everything. I suffer from depression and anxiety and my needs have been placed on the back burner for almost a year now. I have sunk deeper because of the verbal abuse and hatred she screams at me...how I should never have had kids, that I have ruined her life, that I am not her mother to her, that I am to blame for everything gone wrong in her life. She will not go and see our doctor, She chats with a counsellor once a month over the phone and my hub and I believe that this woman has turned our daughter against us by the way she abuses us. The counsellor has a degree in environmental studies--thats it. And that makes her a counsellor to treat OCD??? We live in a small community in Ontario Canada and my hub and I are literally exhausted dealing and living with our child who is 28 years old, has no friends, no contact with anyone, is afraid of going outside---it's been since Sept. 2012 when she was outside. Our 26 year old son says that being at our home is like living in hell, or no he says, it is worth than hell......he won't come anymore to visit or stay overnite. She would yell and scream and bang the wall or bedroom door and go into a frantic hysterical crying spell. My home which used to be a safe haven has become a prison. We are at a loss as to how come no one has been able to offer us help.....our doctor, my psychiatrist, anyone:( we have had to become our own advocates, searching internet, making phone calls, sending emails looking and wandering hopelessly for someone, some place where we can get some help for us and/our daughter. I am so tired of cleaning up after her. The house is being destroyed, our lives and relationships destroyed because she won't acknowledge, or want or accept help.........Mental health help in Ontario Canada is severely limited....you can see how easy it would be for someone to give up when there is NOWHERE to turn for help dealing with OCD..........CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP US??????

Well I can't help you being in Canada as I know they have socialized medicine. However, I would suggest a mental health institution. I believe that she is severely past being diagnosed with just OCD. My son has severe OCD and most of the symptoms that you have mentioned are not common of OCD. Some of them are but most of them are not. I'm sorry you are experiencing this but in the US if you are harm to yourself or someone else you can commit them. Unfortunately, I don't know how healthcare is in Canada for mental health. I agree though that this counselor is probably not qualified to do this work. In the US we have counselors that specialize in OCD. I wish you lots of luck and I can understand your frustrations.

No, other deleted user, this is definitely OCD--with maybe a bit of schizotypal personality disorder or ocdpd (obsessive-compulsive personality disorder) thrown in for good measure. This sounds SO much like my adult son who lives with me and my adult daughter. He is OCD about contamination and he is a tyrant about it. The entire place is going to shit. I can barely keep up with it and my part-time job. I'm in Canada too and the resources are limited. At the very least he has been able to get onto employment insurance for disability which means the money for his compulsions are no longer coming out of my pocket. Nonetheless my time and energy have been going into it. I have unwittingly been an enabler and have been feeding the OCD monster by trying to accommodate him. Big fucking mistake.
