Liver Cancer Support Group
Hepatic tumors are tumors or growths on or in the liver. These growths can be benign or malignant (cancerous). They may be discovered on medical imaging (even for a different reason than the cancer itself), or may present in patients as an abdominal mass, hepatomegaly, abdominal pain, jaundice, or some other liver dysfunction.
Either way, Hospice will take care of him and keep him as comfortable as possible with meds. If he goes home and someone from Hospice isn't there round-the-clock, they will help the family provide for that. I have done companion care with terminal cancer patients in their homes during their final days. You just help them stay comfortable, depending on if they are getting up or staying in bed. Usually, when getting up isn't an option anymore, Hospice puts a cathater in the bladder. The meds, which are finally placed under the tongue, keep them out of pain, and it's harder on the family usually than it is on the patient at that point. The hardest thing for family is feeling the patient needs to eat. If he doesn't want to eat, then he doesn't need food. Tell family not to talk about him or cry around him, because even though you may think he doesn't hear you, he usually does.
I'll pray for you family today. I have a tumor in my liver (cancer) and very early cirrhosis. I'm on the liver transplant list.

My husband passed away on Nov.2 2009 from liver cancer. It was much quicker than we had expected and thought he had a few months and it turned into a few days. He was in the hospital and was beginning to get jaundice they released him on a Monday and he passed away the following Monday much to our surprise. Hospice came into my home on Wed. and on Friday they told me he probably wouldn't make it to the following Tues. they made him comfortable as possible and I had to give him meds which were morphine and Haldol. The combination of these two drugs kept him quite and sleeping. I got to tell him I loved him and he said it back to me before I never got to speak to him again. He passed away at home with me next to him and that is what he wanted...it has been one of the most horrible things I have gone through in my life but I am glad he didn't die in a hospital alone.
