Life After Divorce Support Group
This community is dedicated to starting over after a divorce. With the marriage over, how do individuals begin a new chapter in their lives and what hurdles do they face? Divorce is often one of the most traumatic periods in a person's life. Studies show it is the second-most stressful event in life, after the death of a spouse.
I have taking a sleeping pill the past few weeks because of not sleeping. It started to affect my job and my kids.
The key is not to just look for big things like having a roof over your head, enough to eat, a job, a car that runs, or even that you woke up that morning. Those are important, but finding the little things, like the laughter of a child, a beautiful butterfly, a pretty flower, a gorgeous sunrise or sunset, etc., is the key to finding more and more gratitude. I found that the more I saw, the more I saw and it changed me significantly.
Try to find at least one new thing each day. And keep a gratitude journal. That way, when you are feeling lonely or just down in general, read all that you have to be grateful for. Anthony DeMello in his last book, The Way to Love, says (paraphrasing) that the reason we are unhappy is because we are focusing on what we don't have instead of what we do have. IMHO, the more we stay in the present moment focusing on being grateful for what we have, the less we focus on what we don't have. And it made a difference in how I saw my 'aloneness.'
I also highly recommend counseling w/a therapist who specializes in grief & loss. Also meditation and chanting. You can find different types of meditation & chanting on youtube.
Here's a great video that also might help.
It's called How to Be Alone

Big hugs to you.....
I hope that the pain of your loneliness fades. I hope that your soul can find peace and contentment. And I hope that you can (when the time is right again) be fulfilled by a love that understands and appreciates you for who you are.
I do the same things as you have tried. In particular, I listen to recorded books or podcasts on my iPod. The reason I like that is that I can turn out the light and when I am feeling sleepy enough, just hit the off button. One podcast that is great is Garrison Keilor's "Lake Woebegone." The stories are really pleasant and he has a deep, slow voice.
Which brings me to another idea: I also listen to self-hypnosis or meditations, either through apps or podcasts. There are tons to choose from, for any number of goals.
Sometimes when it is bad, I fall asleep on the couch watching tv. At least the couch is narrow enough that it doesn't feel so lonely.
You're not the only one, believe me.
I wish you the best in your journey.
A couple of things that have worked for me - turn that radio on. While I am working around the house, I have the radio on, just for the comfort of another human voice (obviously, I turn to talk radio). You might have to try several stations until you find one that suits you.
Pets - they're not for everyone and they are not to be undertaken lightly, seeing as you are committing to them for their lifespan but boy, I find them SUCH a comfort. My old doggie died recently, but having my cat running around the house, making me laugh and curling up on my feet at night definitely makes me feel less alone.
Other people I know have taken in a boarder or a roommate. Obviously there are lots of things to consider around this. The first while I could not have stood to have anyone else in the house with me 'cause sometimes I was crying my face off and wanted to be left alone but I am thinking I may consider it sometime in the future.
Hang in there.
Lots of good posts I may try church. We have a lot of clubs around here so after the holidays I may pick some out to try.
