Child Traveling out of State

My son will be traveling out of state in 2 weeks to see my ex husband. The ex normally lives in the same state, but will be working out of state for over 2 months.
I'm freaking out because my son will be travelling with the slutty disfunctional girlfriend. I want to call the airline and just let them know my son is travelling with someone who has approval to transport him, but not actual custody. I just want an extra pair of eyes on him that I can trust. My son isn't even 4 yet. I don't trust the girlfriend at all.
Could this backfire on me? Has anyone done this before?

If this is in the custody agreement there is nothing you can do. I'm pretty sure your son wouldn't have been approved to fly if the father didn't have a girlfriend, or would have had someone else to travel with your son. Who will be watching your son while his dad works? The girlfriend? Also, I know you may not like it, but dad and girlfriend will be taking full care of your son. How long will your son be with his dad? You need to type up a letter and sign it giving dad and girlfriend and anyone else that may be taking care of your son out of state the authority to give any and all medical care for your son and send him with copies of his insurance cards. In this letter you need to also state that dad has temporary custody of his son and the dates and what states dad can have his son in. You have a copy and dad & girlfriend gets a letter. I know it will be very hard. Is there any way you could have driven your son to his dad?

Not really the response I was looking for darcyld, but thanks for the feedback.
To explain further, it is the father's designated weekend to see my son. He has authority to travel with the child during his residential time. The father will not be working. He has his own separate insurance for the child and the authority to provide medical attention. My son will most likely be with his dad having fun the whole time. I'm not trying to prevent the visit. I just want a second pair of eyes on this girlfriend in case she tries anything funny.

What I really want to know is, If I make the airline aware of the situation, does anyone see that backfiring on me?

If your agreement states dad is to pick up the child you could insist that this provision be kept. I don't know if the airlines would even get involved in this matter. I would call them and ask them if this will give you peace of mind. I totally understand what your feelings are regarding this since your child is so young and this woman is a total stranger.

Always, trust your gut feelings especially when it comes to your child. If you mean dad getting angry with you for not trusting his judgement or lack of, could this back fire with him getting angry with you. Yes, there is a possibility of him becoming angry.
