I'm a 56 yo Navy veteran finally addressing the issues that have played me for a lifetime.....severe to moderate depression, anxiety, social disconnection the list goes on but making great progress in both these and physical health, which I'm finding aides the mental recovery, because of self image and self esteem issues. BUT the one issue that has plaqued me for my lifetime.........is lying. It's nearly cost me the best relationship I've ever had.....but if it's not addressed then it's over. My calendar is full with group and classroom therapy through the VA,. I just need a support group that understands this.

Welcome to the group, Yacht. Your among a griupbof your peers in at least one way. And the why of it all is one of the biggest questions we all have. In 62 and don't deal with many of the things you are, but the lying and the wondering why has been on my plate for many years. My first suggestion to you would be to figure out who you are and be okay with that person. Not the lying part, but the rest of the issues you are dealing with. When you are ok with the real you, you don't feel the need to lie about it. Getting out from under that rock makes it easier to address the other issue in our lives that we want to make better.

Y’achtmaker, what are you afraid of? We lie out of fear. Fear of judgement, being imperfect, lose of control, abandonment.... What is your trigger? When did it start? It has nothing to do with being a good person or a bad person. It has become a coping mechanism for you to avoid the truth. We think the truth will cause us harm. But it is the other way around. Lying is a cop out. So embrace your imperfections because they are who we really are inside that make us unique. And if someone doesn’t “like” your imperfections then maybe they are not important enough to be in close circle. It’s ok to own your shit!! I found out that my partner might get upset with me over something I am truthful about but will get over it! She will never get over a lie!!!! Enjoy this day and every one in your future being vulnerable as your authentic self!!!!

Once we break everything down, we find out that we aren't any better or worse than the next person.

Gwilly ,Mike, Steve thank you. It's reaffirming that I'm not alone. I have an incredible woman that believes in me, she has never judged me, her love is unconditional. She sees the me I can't see. She sees me as she says that 12yo boy......that was the age my father died, that started this spiral into shame,depression, self loathing, alcoholism, a trail of destruction in my wake.......lying. I want to give a shout out to the Veterans Admin......they have given me 100% support and help. I want to encourage any brother in arms, if you're struggling I implore you to contact the VA.
