Habits are hard to break. Slow down before speaking and really think about what you are about to say and if you catch yourself telling a lie, then make amends to the person you told the lie to and fess-up.

Be patient with yourself, it will take time, focus and perserverance.

I take it one conversation at a time. I give myself a pat on the back when I can make it through an entire conversation without lying. I would ask your best friend to be understanding as you learn to deal with your compulsion. Also, have you begun working steps around your lying? This is step one stuff... The best thing I have found, especially with someone who you know understands that you lie/have lied like your friend is just to say: I'm sorry, that was a lie, apologize and let him know you are trying not to do that any more. I've been surprised at the number of people who are very willing to be supportive, and the number of people in my life who have always been aware of my problem, yet liked me in spite of it. Getting your problem out in the open will help you get better at minimum.

To me, the effort really comes when u realize it will be harder than you think. If you thought this was easy as I discovered, you were lying to yourself.

inspire - thanks for the quote. It seems so appropriate for the struggle we are going though. I've also come to believe that we are not able to fight this by ourselves. Seeking strength, support and help from a higher power is essential in helping us to feed the good wolf and starve the bad wolf.

Iswan662- im glad you can you that quote and its true doingbhti salone is the stuggle we have to face, i have no one to help me, my family and friends have abandoned me and i recently lost the love of my life to this ungodly addiction. so my struggles as yours are great, not having a support system is so hard. Ive been keeping a journal and reading everything i can get a hold of, been walking and running, seeing my therapist once a week and going to meditation and doing hypnosis tape at night for lying addiction. but i find my self becoming angry and lone and depressed every other hour. but we need to love ourselves from within and come clean to ourselves before we can ever beat this monster. Im so grateful i have theses forums be be able to vent and talk with fellow warriors. causes that's what we are or will be.

inspire - while this site is great, there is nothing like an actual physical support meeting. I've had nothing but support from the ones I've attended. Since there were no Liar's Anonymous meetings around me (or none that I could find anywhere), I started attending a recovery group called Celebrate Recovery. Many people on this site have found great support in 12 step groups like AA. Just switch the words lying and alcohol (when they recite things) and it can work. Good luck to you.

If I can be so bold to say - if your friends abandoned you they may not really have been true friends. Reach out to others and form new friendships. Again the 12 step groups are a great place to find people who will not judge you and will be willing to support you in your struggle.
