Joining because I am a LIAR, We have been married for almost 53 years and I have lied to my Wife to avoid conflicts. I know that lying is never the way and that it only brings grief. I have been advised to stop and think before I say something but thats not always working. Any hints to help avaoid telling a lie

Try stopping and thinking before you start talking. This has helped me cut back on the number of lies I have told. I also work at IMMEDIATELY retracting a lie when it comes out of my mouth. Let us know how it is going?

Thanks for the tip, I will try to stop and think before speaking. I have found that when I am rushed or anxious I don't stop to think about what I'm saying, and many times its a LIE. It's not an excuse just what happens. Thanks again

I've tried stopping and thinking, and it definitely helps. But a couple days ago I found a new obstacle: I stopped (to think through the best answer, true or not), before I proceeded with a lie I tried to think through it all, and before I could respond at all my wife recognized my usual stop-to-lie face and the whole issue escalated into a fight, before I had a chance to think through the process and answer honestly. Is there any advice on how to immediately recognize, stop the lie, and answer truthfully?

Hi! This is a little late, but try vowing to yourself and writing it down to stop lying and just how you’re going to do it. I was able to stop cold turkey, and although I’m only 10- 11 days into the journey, it gets better. It’s so cliche but at least we’re all here, acknowledging the problem. That’s a big step if you ask me . However once I had something in written form, I feel more accountable to myself. Now, there’s going to be days where it’s harder to tell the truth, but I’m retraining my brain so when it’s something bigger, I trust myself to come out with the truth. You can start big or small and just keep going. Keep us updated, please!
