Hi, I'm new to this site just started today. I am a liar, it is messing up my marriage and i need it to stop sometimes i do it without even knowing and then once I realize I worry if I say anything I'll look horrible for it. I was taught to lie when I was younger. I was sexually assaulted and forced to lie and cover it up for a year. it became second nature to me after a while. I was told if you believe it then its the truth. Now I lie all the time about the most ridiculous things like me spnding $1 to get a sweet teafrom mcdonalds. I finally came to the conclusion yesterday with the help of my husband that I am a liar and that it is a serious problem and that it is harming out marriage. I read the steps onlin to start recovering from this addiction and they said support groups are great to help and also being able to dicuss your problems with people who really understand and some who may even be able to help. Thank you for reading and any advice you can give.

Welcome I'm currently going through the same with my marriage, we are newlyweds but have been together for 4 years. I also grew up telling lies so it became second nature and it is hard to break. When you have the opportunity to tell the truth or lie, take some time before you answer, that can help you. If you lie instantly (it's like a sad muscle memory for me that I do) find a way to tell the truth after.

I do the same it's like a normal reaction. I just have to find a way to correct the lie I made and hope my husband understands that I'm trying. I'm lucky he has been understanding so far but I don't want to drive him away for good.

Understand that it is going to take time to improve but have the mindset to be better everyday. My counselor told me to start journaling. When you lie write it down and write down what was going through your mind. That could help too

Hi April, I am new here as of today! The first post I came across was yours, I ruined a 3 year realtionship behind lies. I lied about having money or material possessions, sometimes I am told I am lying and get so tired defending myself I just admit to lying. I guess I wanted to be loved so much I stooped to any level to achieve that. My advice is to confess as soon as the lie comes out of your mouth that it's a lie! Admitting it's a problem and trying to fix it are the most important steps! It's hard to humble ourselves and admit we are powerless over our lying it's become a way of life! Also don't be afraid to come here and ask for support. You are not alone!

Thank you, it really is a daily struggle, I also have depression so I'll lie and say I'm fine when I'm not or tell my husband I'm okay when really I could just curl up and cry. My husband isn't good with emotions or expressing them at all and when I do express mine just by talking he usually doesn't respond to well and I feel stupid for saying anything so it is easier to lie and say I'm okay rather then having a awkward talk or I end up holding it in and we have a big fight and all my emotions come out at once and he calls me a liar for not telling him but I don't know how to without it being awkward or him getting upset because I also don't always know why I am sad I just wake up sad and emotionally drained an it isn't easy to explain.
